How difficult was breastfeeding for you? I am expecting #1 and want to BF but all I hear is how difficult it is. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

It can be difficult but don't let that scare you. Make sure you get the help you need from the start, from the nurses at the hospital and/or lactation consultants. My hospital had a mother's group w/one of the lactation consultants that was invaluable. My dd couldn't nurse, btw, so I pumped and bottle fed, but still found the lactation consultants helpful. nearly impossible -- and i ended up in the hospital with breast abscesses and staph infections. but i'm a really extreme case. from what i hear from others, it's either really hard or really easy... GL [ Reply | More ]

Mine was terrible--but I think I am unusual. I had so many cuts and bleeding on both breasts that even my ob was surprised at how bad it was. It was painful. I quit after a week. With my 2nd baby, she latched on like an old pro and it was easy [ Reply | More ]

very hard for me, esp. after hearing MIL talk about how easy it was for her, but after 2 weeks it got much easier and in the end i think it can be MUCH easier than FFing. [ Reply | More ]

OMG don't listen to these people. the first few weeks are hard but worth it. MUCH more easy to lie down next do your DC in the middle of the night instead of making a bottle of formula imo [ Reply | More ]

but it's much easier for your nanny or night nurse to get up and give the baby a bottle while you are peacefully asleep. [ Reply | More ]

um, what? i didn't have either and do you think that your child will only wake up for the first few weeks of life? a night nurse is only for the first 2 weeks or so. [ Reply | More ]

stop being so harsh. some people cannot nurse for some very serious reasons, illness being one of them. stop judging. [ Reply | More ]

that's not what the OR is saying. it's one thing to formula feed because you have issues, it's another thing if you decide to do it so the "night nurse" can take over. that's pathetic. [ Reply | More ]

Of course you hear that. Everybody always tells you the horror stories about pregnancy, labor, breastfeeding etc. Sure it can be hard, but for most people it is not. Try see how it goes, it will probably be fine - if not there are options [ Reply | More ]

It was a little painful at first, but after that it was easy. It's funny that the breastfeeding class I took while pregnant was actually helpful, and the childbirth class was not at all. DH and I made fun of the BFing class, but the information was invaluable. [ Reply | More ]

Not easy - db refused boob, had been bottle fed in hospital while I was recovering from c-section, etc. ended up mostly pumping for 13 months. totally worth it. [ Reply | More ]

my only difficulties were "normal" pain from latching on (for a few weeks *only*), and not knowing what was normal bf-on-demand baby behavior (obviously, there is quite a range-- my dd nursed more often and for much shorter periods than I had learned about in my bf class). I can't imagine doing it any other way, there are *so* many benefits for both me and dd (9 months old and still on the boob :-) Pumping can be a PITA, and was easy for me to give up on as a sahm-- but people figure that out too, and you can cross that bridge when it comes... In case you have a lot of problems BF (like me), persistence is key. I had so many problems (too many to list) & at some point, 6 weeks into having baby at home, I stopped pumping and put him on the breast--and he took! It was so wonderful--not to say that it hasn't been challenging. You are on a very short lease & I only work 2 days a week. (I can't imagine BF & working FT.) But I love seeing him grow into a strong baby boy--all due to my milk. I highly recommed silicone nipple shields--even if you have perfect nipples, they provide a nice barrier to your child's gnawing. Good luck & remember that persistence helps & yes--you can feed lying down almost asleep. (Not possible to FF doing this.) [ Reply | More ]

I am in the same situation. I am very stressed out about breast feeding. I do want to try to breast feed, but honestly dont know if it is for me. I think a happy mother is the best thing for the baby. There is way too much pressure to breast feed-it isnt right for everyone. Most of our mothers didnt breast feed and we are all ok [ Reply | More ]

It was tough fort he first week or so because of the exhaustion, but once we got the hang of it (and now they really do hang) it was a breeze... i remember when I was nervous at the beginning, my step-mom said, "If the pain is so bad that your toes are curling, you're doing it right," and that actually made me easier about it... at the beginning it hurts, but that passes... The beginning is the toughest. I highly recommend having a visit with a lactation consultant during the first few days after birth. Getting the latch right was the toughest, and then learning how to do it if I wasn't home was tough. I had to learn how to cradle ds properly without a boppy to help. I ended up going for 2 years, though, so I thought it was worth it. GL! [ Reply | More ]
