How bout getting a variance for a good public. We actually turned down a great private for one. Check out Insideschools.org There really are some excellent teachers that choose good publics over privates for higher pay, [ Reply | More ]

It's supposedly a great school. Although the classes are big the teachers are reportedly excellent and know how to manage them. Know of 2 kids who went there and went to pirvate school and ivy colleges later. Take a look at it, and speak with parents. Ma [ Reply | More ]

Of course. You can apply to some in first grade, and then middle school and HS. Also who knows how your child will test...they might end up at one of the selective public middle and Hs's later. [ Reply | More ]

Yes. Many privates open up spaces for middle school. This could be 5th or 6th grade, depending on the school. A lot of schools will give specifics on their web sites. [ Reply | More ]

Many of the k-12s come close to doubling their class size with the middle and high school admissions. Indeed, the academic reputations of the TT schools is really built on their high schools, and an important component of this is all of the very smart and highly motivated unconnected kids who they admit for the 6th and 9th grades. Because admissions at these levels don't include a lot of siblings and legacies, and also because at that age there are a lot more data points relating to kids' academic abilities, admissions as these points seem much less random and much more merit based than K admissions. As one of the people who swelled the ranks of a TT 9th grade, I totally concur with this. All the people who came in with me were regular smart kids and broadened the class in many excellent ways. And MOST of them went to better colleges than those who had been there since K, by the way, although I won't pretend that that's in any way scientific. But it did make an impression on me. We were more motivated, by a long shot. [ Reply | More ]

I think Brinton Parson is great. She is very calm and very connected. I don't think she or anyone else there will get your DC into a particular school but she is very close to the process--she applied her twins out last year so she is very current on the situation. Some of the other advisors are older and may have more dated opinions on the situation. [ Reply | More ]

np-dd at Spence (Brinton taught there), ds at St. Bernards. I would also recommend her. She is no longer teaching, but has that perspective. She is works with some education "industry" group, I forget which. Anyway, she will really steer you in the righ direction. She's nice, normal & informed. [ Reply | More ]

I found Brinton disingenuous and almost offensive. Bourne Walsh is much more substantive. For example.... Brinton told me that the whole feeder nursery school thing was total BS and that a no name nursery school was the same deal. Then a few months later I read an article about Episcopal firing their director and there's a quote from her saying that she (brinton) is furious because one of the reasons she "chose" episcopal for her twins was because the director was connected and did well at exmissions! Her attitude during my workshop was one of supreme noblesse oblige which I also found to be a total turnoff. [ Reply | More ]
