Is Penn one of those schools that isn't exactly prestegious, but some very competitive students wind up going there? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Isn't Penn an ivy league college? [ Reply | More ]

yes, it is. But that doesn't mean that it's as selective as some better schools (Williams, Amherst, and the other ivies). [ Reply | More ]

more selective than Cornell, Dartmouth and some other ivies as well [ Reply | More ]

Please. Dartmouth? Irritating people go there, but the smarter kids go there, as opposed to the kids who go to Penn. You've got to be kidding yourself. You must be a Penn alumni, who like most of them, is quite insecure. [ Reply | More ]

They usually seem more driven than insecure. Cornell and Penn grads don't seem overly focused on th eschool they went to unlike the kids wo go to school in Boston who mention it every 5 minutes. I know 60 year olds that do this. [ Reply | More ]

no way it's as selective or prestigious at Dartmouth (i'm not affiliated in any way with either school, by the way). i'd say it's about equivalent to Cornell in those respects. [ Reply | More ]

you must be Penn-affiliated if you think that. my dh and i are both HYP, and Penn students were never considered as bright as Dartmouth ones (or Brown or Columbia, for that matter). [ Reply | More ]

That is a PERFECT description. The kids from my high school who got in were not the brightest of the brightest, but super-competitive, gunner-types, who couldn't get into Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Brown, etc. [ Reply | More ]

It is easily as hard to get in as Brown and Columbia. There are only a certain number of spots at Y, P and H. [ Reply | More ]

this is true. When I was in college (early 90s), Brown and Dartmouth were the flunky ivies. They are all good, and Penn is prestigious, even if it is ranked 10 this year. [ Reply | More ]

Penn is the best undergrad B-school in the country (and perhaps the world). It is prestigious. You must be one of those fools confusing it with Penn State. [ Reply | More ]

I went to Penn, and they sold t-shirts that said "not Penn State." Funny thing is, I ended up going to grad school at Penn state. [ Reply | More ]

funny ... Penn grads are always the ones trying to say how their school really is JUST as good as HYP, how they could have gone to HYP "if they wanted to," etc. etc. methinks they doth protest too much. the school is fine but nothing great. [ Reply | More ]

I have never heard that from a Penn grad. In fact, I've seen Penn grads say they consider HYP grads to be more elitist geeks with Princeton being especially boring. [ Reply | More ]

Penn is prestigious as an Ivy, but it is not HYP and doesn't pretend to be. Penn is more like a professional or trade school than HYP which are more academic. Penn has some extremely academic departments, but the big draw is professional and pre-professional. Lots of future doctors, lawyer business people and engineers. The student body reflects this so you will find some very competitive students there. [ Reply | More ]
