Didn't realize that this would cause such an uproar! I'm from NYC and my family always belonged to the Yale Club (my dad is an alum -- I'm not). I joined the NYJL after college (and continue to volunteer with them many years later). DH also went to Yale and belonged to the YC before we ever even met. (We use it like people in the burbs use a country club -- we go there for brunch on father's day and for things like that.) [ Reply | More ]

why. with so many wonderful restaurants in nyc do you waste time and money at the yale club. which btw anyone can join [ Reply | More ]

OMG. I don't care if it's exclusive or not (and neither does anyone else in my family). Just meant that it's nice to have a "regular" place that can accomodate a big group without a fuss and that is child-friendly and centrally located (for non- NYC relatives) and that will make room for us with short notice (it's a good "fall back"). I know that it's not great food (it's fine), but it works for us. I don't think that this is a big deal (membership) -- was just trying to answer questions. (YC does have other things, too -- children's programming, book club, gym, discounts at other places.) [ Reply | More ]

There are plenty of more social clubs out there, Cosmopolitan Club is a place where people join to meet with people they already know, not a lot of mixers. Have you searched for clubs that share hobbies you like or your university clubs? I don't really know how unconnected people, you need someone present you, find membership. It must happen, but my advice in that direction is going to be helpful. if you went and saw it you must know someone there right? [ Reply | More ]

Then I really wouldn't join for that reason. I would ask around to friends you know what if any clubs they belong to. You should know many of the clubs have a closed NYC network attached, don't know why or what the purpose is, but it always turns out t be a we knew someone who was at choate with (____). Tell them you are looking around to join sommewhere go to an event with them. Are you doing this for other reasons? Dcs maybe connections for private ongoing etc [ Reply | More ]

Was thinking of doing it out of curiosity more than anything else. We both liked the idea of somewhere quiet and comfortable to have a drink, maybe chat with people. seems better than going to a bar. certainly not doing it for school connections. [ Reply | More ]

Pick one a friend belongs to and that is near your work or home. We are near the C Club but my dh hates going, it is really a women's club :-) I would offer to be your sponsor, but of course I don't know you. GL [ Reply | More ]
