Never paid attention until now, but read in the paper that recently the Voting Rights Act was extended another 25 years, allowing minorities to vote. Is that cause for celebration? Or should there be a new law allowing everyone to vote. Period. Otherwi e, what will happen 25 years from now? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

it doesn't mean that minorities get the right to vote per se, but that the gov. has to do things to help be sure minorites can vote, such as have ballots in the languages that people in the district speak, having translators available, signs in other lan uages, etc. [ Reply | More ]

So why the time extension instead of making it a permanent thing. [ Reply | More ]

25 years from now a lot more people will be mixed race, and our current racial categories will look pretty old-fashioned. [ Reply | More ]

The Voting Rights Act does NOT allow minorities to vote. It keeps certain measures in place to ensure that voting is done properly... [ Reply | More ]

Like not making them take a test in order to vote right, or something silly like that? [ Reply | More ]

What? Why does it have to be renewed? That's ridiculous that there is something on the books "allowing" minorities to vote. Is it a right for citizens or not?\\ [ Reply | More ]

I'm sorry, but are you that ignorant of politics and American History? The voting rights act fought actions by the governments in the deep south that using various mechanisms to keep blacks/minorities from exercising their right to vote. [ Reply | More ]

no. you need to read the fine print. 15th amendment to constitution allows citizens to vote regardless of race, color or previous servitude. The voting rights act prohibits states from making laws that circumvent the 15th amendment. things like reading tests and other measures. they have to keep renewing this piece of legislation b/c the sadly some among us still want to disenfranchise voters, particularly those who are poor and of color. some legislators feel that there is no need for voting rights act anymore b/c these types of practices don't take place, but as we can see from our two most recent national elections they do. "renewing this piece of legislation b/c the sadly some among us still want to disenfranchise voters," well, that's my point. Why not make it a permanent law or however it's done so that renewal is not necessary. [ Reply | More ]

b/c as i explained, there are legislators who don't want to make it permanent b/c they think there will come a time when we will be past that and this law will seem silly. i agree with you, but alas, i am not the old white men running the country. [ Reply | More ]
