During our long memorial day drive, I noticed our 5.5 m/o DD looking at the window at the passing cars/trees on I95. The same thing occurred with the car lights at night. The flashing images were quite similar to TV. I was thinking of asking (m), those ABSOLUTELY NO TV proponents how they handle this? Do you shade DB eyes? Has the London study studied infants (ie suburbanites) and taken this into consideration? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I am a very strict no TV person and I also notice my DD looking out the window in the car- in my opinion, its ok, you can't shield them from everything! [ Reply | More ]

OP: I apologize, maybe my intent (or sarcasm) was not clear so early in the morning. I am trying to point out that those obsessed with NO TV, (Not me), that looking out the window could possibly be equally as damaging. [ Reply | More ]

I believe it was posted on this message board. Printed in the LA times. That TV for those under 2 is potentially damaging to children. I think the APA says it is well. [ Reply | More ]

i think you're taking it too far! it's hours and hours of tv that harms kids, not the occasional mellow program. driving in a car is in no way parallel. [ Reply | More ]

my db doesn't really watch tv but i wouldn't care if she did. there is NO evidence that a little tv is bad. the apa just says that using tv a lot instead of human interaction is bad. duh. [ Reply | More ]

OP: I am in agreement. However, the last TV topic had certain people against ANY AMOUNT OF TV. I believe that moderation is the key. But others felt that ANY TV was harmful. [ Reply | More ]

Yup, some moms are real freaky when it comes to TV. I used to know a mom who alwats sat between child and TV when they are at somebody else's place. She tried so hard that her baby would not even see a glimpse. [ Reply | More ]

In principal I am against any TV for our newborn. In reality, of course, she will be exposed but nonetheless (or perhaps therefore) we try to expose her to none. My wife and I do watch tv and occasionally she will be feeding and the tv (m) of course will be on in the background and it's striking and to me disturbing how she will crane her neck and wriggle in order to see it, regardless of what is on. Like everyone else, I grew up watching a ton of tv (though I can't say for sure if I watched any at all before 2 y/o) and am now an inveterate reader BUT notwithstanding it I'm still fairly convinced that radically limiting our daughters tv exposure before she's verbal is a damn good idea. Inevitably, the box becomes a babysitter and only become easier to use as a pacifier. I have no doubts that the negative consequences are, in some sense, mild -- she's not going to be stupid, or ignorant or have gross psychological problems because she watched some tv as an infant -- but by the same token, all things being equal I think she will be better off for having little or no exposure for the first couple of years. Like, um, duh... you're wrong. Of course nearly every psychological study is up to some level of interpretation but why do you think the APA recommends no TV for children under 2? They don't say "some tv", they say zero tv. [ Reply | More ]

TFK has an article saying the avg tween watches 4.5 to 5 hrs of TV every day in America. That's worrisome. An occasional show here or there is no biggie even for toddlers. I try to stick to a zero tv on weekday policy which works out well. [ Reply | More ]
