My 6yo took piano this year for the first time and loved it. I will sign up again. This is a good age for this, right? [ Reply | More ]

of course. i actually start much earlier. but the main thing is that you said that he loves it. try to keep out of the practice/nagging, etc. and he will continue to love it. kids go through stages with practice and the enjoyment. just let him figure it out on his own, and the battles for practice will never start. We don't "practice" in the sense that I make her sit down and do the lesson. We just bang on the piano. She eventually showed me some of what she learned from the lessons at her own choosing, not my asking. She is excited to be able to play scales [ Reply | More ]

that sounds perfect. i hope you weren;t thinking that i was accusing you of getting poverly involved, just mentioning what i have learned helps keep kids in class for years and years. (excited to play scales? really? that is certainly different!) [ Reply | More ]

lol. She is! She's all like "mom, this is C scale" and then plays it. I act all impressed. I can play, so I know how fun this can be to a newbie [ Reply | More ]

my 8-y-o ds has been complaining for some time. and the truth is, he is not very good. he's been taking lessons for two years and has made very little progress (compared with his older brother and my nieces). finally he started refusing to go to his lessons so i let him quit. is this a mistake? i am trying to think of a new instrument for him--he has some fine motor issues (gets OT) so I feel like the piano was just too hard. Is that wrong? Can everyone play? I remember his grandmother saying she was awful and her piano teacher quit. Perhaps he's like her (god forbid)? [ Reply | More ]

you should find another teacher. i have taught kids where they have not touched the piano for 6 months at a time for different reasons (fear, neurologicao disorders, etc.) it should always be fun. yes, everyohne can play, at least for fun. hope you have watched this over night. i had to go to bed last night. will look at this again later. Thanks. I did come back b/c I had to go to bed, too!! As for my DS, we're giving him the summer off. My husband is v. opposed to him going back to piano--don't know why--and DS himself has dug his heels in. He is a stubborn child and it is better to back off and come back later than to argue. His teacher was v. kind and flexible. Don't think that is the problem. But thanks for the input that all can succeed. It inspires me to try again. [ Reply | More ]

If we can't fit a piano in our apt, what kind of electronic keyboard can we get for our dd to practice on? Can we use an inexpensive one for the beginning until we know she's taken to it? [ Reply | More ]

my 3.5 yo ds really likes music, and I think has a lot of talent (good hearing for music, etc). What would you recommend to do to foster it? seems too young to learn an instrument right? (he has tons of toy instruments which he likes, and good attention span, but still I can't imagine him enjoying a formal piano (or other instrument) lesson. When to start? what to do now? [ - ] I find myself in this cycle of having to completely clean the house from top to bottom at least every 9 weeks and it ends up taking me two weeks to get done well enough to my standards. MIL comes to stay with us about once every 3 mths but if she can, the visits are closer together. I seriously think all this housecleaning is affecting my fertility.
