I know it's a little early, but I've started budgeting for Christmas gifts, as well as tips and wondering how much I should be giving my doormen? I've never lived in a doorman building, but recently moved into one a month ago. There are 4 main guys, and then 1 that is there mostly in the early morning for a few hours. There is also a live in super. Is $50 each too little? $100? Should the super get more? They're all helpful and nice if that makes a difference. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

It depends on what they do for you and what you can afford. I'd give the super at least 75-100. Some people will give way more and some will give nothing. [ Reply | More ]

They haven't done much yet, but I've only been living here for a month. They give me my mail and packages, and if they're heavy they put them on the cart for me. [ Reply | More ]

but someone is taking your boxes out to garbage on street, breaking them down, and cleaning the halls etc. handling recyclables. IMO, this group has the hardest job! [ Reply | More ]

That's true. The super and one of the doormen handle the garbage and recycling. [ Reply | More ]

If anything, since you're only there for like 4 months, you could get away with tipping on the low side this time. I'd do $50 each doorman; super a little more; but you might be surprised at the people who come out of the woodwork around Christmas time (porters, other people who work there and want a tip). I don't know what other people give in our coop. We only have a super (no doorman) and I give the super and his wife $300 because I feel they do a lot of work. I have a neighbor who announced that she gives nothing. It's up to you and what is in your budget. [ Reply | More ]

how big is your apt? what type building, amenities, TT building or basic? We live in 2 bedroom with some amenities and give everyone the same $100. If anything, I think the porters and guys behind the scene that handle garbage and general cleaning deserve the most, since thats prob the hardest job. If anything, we give super a little less [ Reply | More ]

What type of amenities? Basic I guess. No gym or playroom, but a nice rooftop. The super and one of the doormen handle the cleaning and garbage, so would I give those two more than the rest? [ Reply | More ]

No, what you give them is ex officio. Most for the super, less (but equal) for the doormen, less for the porter. [ Reply | More ]
