Thoughts please - we are very strapped right now financially but should be coming into money in the next few months. All of our friends are going away to the Caribbean over Christmas and all the kids are friends but it sounds dreadful to me though I know my kids would have a great time. I would rather spend the money on a European vacation with only my family. Presumably wouldn’t be as enjoyable for my kids. Due to money issues can only take one vacation. Am I being selfish? This doesn't have anything to do with your current financial situation - you want to take your family on a European vacation. Other families are going to the Caribbean. They go to the Caribbean and you go to Europe. No selfishness, it's your family, your values. [ Reply | More ]

Did your parents let you decide where the family went on vacation when you were a child? Mine didn't. [ Reply | More ]

How old are your kids? I wouldn't take them to Europe if they're still in the napping stage (BTDT in March, never again, we were stuck in the hotel room a lot of the time). Otherwise, there are a lot of fun things to do for kids if you look for them. You can always do the Caribbean another time. [ Reply | More ]

Didn't you hear, they're coming into some money! But we don't get to know how much! Because that might help us answer the question! [ Reply | More ]

Because she said she can only take one vacation, I think she means, one vacation for the year - so Europe may not be over winter break but next spring or summer. [ Reply | More ]

Op here - the money situation is relevant because I can only afford one vacation this year. I will go to Europe in spring or Caribbean in December. I mentioned we are going to come into some money so that nobody gives me shit for planning a vacation when strapped. I mention we are strapped because I can only afford one trip. Thanks. +1. We just got back (having scrimped and saved, and used points to purchase the airfare). It's so much better for all of you than lying on a beach. [ Reply | More ]

I posted above about going to Europe in March with a napping toddler. I'm looking forward to "just" lying on the beach WAY more after that experience. [ Reply | More ]

NP Will your toddler sleep in a stroller? We wised up and started taking our big stroller that reclines with us on trips where we knew we'd be out and about so DS could nap in it. Last trip we took was to PR and it worked out perfectly. Took stroller to the beach. Let him play for a little bit and then down for a nap. Then DH and I got 2-3 hours to ourselves to relax. And its actually easier to take through the airport than a travel one because you don't have to collapse it and put it up on the belt. They let you roll it through the metal detector and they just swab it down. [ Reply | More ]

Ds sleeps much more soundly in his uppababy than in the babyzen Yoyo, but we were in Florence and Rome, and the babyzen was cumbersome enough. I can’t imagine trying to get that behemoth (which I do love) onto a tiny European elevator or lugging it up the stairs. Also it wouldve been much easier if he was just napping once a day, but it was still twice a day at that time. [ Reply | More ]

Oh, the 2 naps does make a difference. During that period I think we mostly just took road trips so he could sleep in the car or car seat if needed. [ Reply | More ]

If you can only afford one vacation, you can't afford one vacation. You should be putting that money in the bank. [ Reply | More ]

Just in terms of "If you don't have the money, spend it anyway" https://vimeo.com/41152287 ... I am the person who wants to move to France for a year below, and I am feeling so urgent about finding ways to travel while our kids are old enough to remember it / young enough to be cooperative. Not into doing these things with my husband when we are 70, or maybe let's do both! But not into missing them now. It's like signing your kid up for something at what feels like the right age.. that's the age. You want to grab it while you can. [ Reply | More ]

Would it work to tell the kids when this money shows up that -1- Europe is happening, and -2- if you spend less in certain ways (maybe they can help by cooking pancakes for dinner instead of going out or whatever) that then they will be able to go to the beach with friends? Chart on fridge? Maybe not a match for your household at all but I may try it for next April and summer. [ Reply | More ]

you don't say how old the dc's are, but if under 10, I'd do the Caribbean vacation and save Europe for when they are older. [ Reply | More ]
