Tuesday daydream! If you have spent a year or more living abroad with your kids, what was your tax situation like? Or do you know anything about what it should be? For France, it looks to me like I can do a few 90-day tourist visas plus private schools, which would be under the radar for $, but are there real problems like: people not taking our school registration or not being renting to us beyond air bnb? No idea whether we'd get a long stay visa or want one, since once they know you are there, taxes are like 50%. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Talk to a tax professional. There are certain exclusions and rates for foreigners in France. You are still liable for U.S. taxes, but there are offsets. [ Reply | More ]

Be careful- the biggest tax burden there is the wealth tax, not income taxes. You won’t have a problem With school registration if you are looking at international schools like ASP. You can probably pay someone up front to rent an apartment. It is illegal to reside in a country and enter on a tourist visA. But I don’t think it’s that hard to get a resident visa if you don’t need a work visa and you are rich. [ Reply | More ]

Not rich in a way that a wealth tax might hit (I don't think, but I would be so flattered) but we do have US income and insurance that we can keep anywhere. Maybe with all the laptop hobos out there, this is a growing thing? [ Reply | More ]

I think France abolished the wealth tax last year and replaced it with a tax on just real estate. [ Reply | More ]
