Yes. Looking at D3 middle schools. The test scores seem lower than I would expect. [ Reply | More ]

From my personal experience, the grade has a group of ICT students and also non English speaker students (Yes, they came in at 6th grade as well) who would bring down the scores. On the other hand, there's also a group of strong students who would do just as well at Booker (I saw their works). The school scores do not paint a complete picture. If you DS is strong, there's no reason to worry. [ Reply | More ]

Why did this grade get a group of students like this that weren’t there in prior years? Like I said the scores seemed to have dropped a lot. [ Reply | More ]

oh another fact, last yr, MH had to absorb MS 165 students. MS 165 closed down due to poor performance and MH agreed to absorb all the 165 students who wanted to go there for 7th grade. As a result, 7th g state test results dropped a lot. [ Reply | More ]

Did they make the same deal with sixth graders? Because only 38% of them got a 3 or 4 in math. [ Reply | More ]

The 6th grade Math teacher was my DC's least favorite teacher, let's leave at that. [ Reply | More ]

I didn't even look at the overall result. I hope this will give the 6th g math teacher something to reflect upon. [ Reply | More ]

Do you think your child is being well prepared for high school? Do kids at Mott hall get into good high schools? [ Reply | More ]

I give my DC supplementary works to make sure he's well prepared. I would have done this regardless if DC is in MH or Booker. I decided against Booker because of its sheer size, and trust me, more Booker kids receive supplementary works than MH's. As far as if MH students get into good HS, certainly. I know one who got into a Specialized HS, La Guardia and the reg. HS she applied to. Bottom line is if you DC is a good student and you are a parent who keep up (not helicopter but just pay attention), I don't see why he/ she wouldn't get into a good HS. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks. My child will do better in a more nurturing environment. He also is into reading and liberal arts and is artistic so being bogged down with too much homework is not his thing. Thank you so much for weighing in today and answering so many questions. [ Reply | More ]

If you are still following this thread, 6th grade I did a variety from grammar (because I believe it's important), math (it's his strong subject and the school work was not challenging and ELA (it's his weaker subject). Just do couple pages on different subject on a regular basis. From what I know is Booker has lots of works beg of the year, then it slowed down mid year. It sounded like they just wanted to shock the new students and make sure they take their works seriously. If your DC likes structure and doesn't mind the big environment, Booker T is def a consideration. [ Reply | More ]

I think Booker is too big for him. Is that the only one of the good D4 middle schools that has more challenging math? Do you think computer or WESS is more academically rigorous? Because I prefer Mott over those two of the academics are not better at those two. Thanks!! [ Reply | More ]

All the schools you mentioned are in D3, not D4. Computer is more progressive and lax environment, it would be more suited for kids who are self motivated and proactive. WESS, I don't know too much about but I know kids are happy at both WESS and Computer. I hear kids are not happy at Booker but more at the beginning of the school year. I also know kids transferred out of Booker because they couldn't catch up or didn't want the pressure but again, I know many kids who are happy there. If you live above 96 st, CSS is another option. The tours will definitely help both you and your DC to decide. [ Reply | More ]
