Would you let a 6th grader travel to an activity alone at 6:45? Would require taking the B/c train a couple of stops or walking 20’minutes up CPW (to the west 80s). I would pick him up at 8. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I guess it would depend on the kid. My daughter wouldn't do it by herself. My son would have no problem. It will start getting darker earlier if that matters. If your child has no problem with it, give it a try. Does your child have a phone? [ Reply | More ]

Why are people afraid if sun goes down? It’s still 6:45 pm and streets and subways are packed [ Reply | More ]

This. Walk next to the buildings with doormen or stores, not on the parkside if it matters. [ Reply | More ]

Yes he does. He easily started commuting to middle school alone this week. Would you let him come home alone? This would be 8 pm. I don’t think he would be comfortable then. This is a fairly short term activity and only meets 7 times, it will be done by November. [ Reply | More ]

I’d pick him up until he told me not to. You can shadow him. So it looks like he’s alone but you are there. I did that. Just enter the same subway car through different doors sit apart... [ Reply | More ]

Great advice. I’ll have to leave my almost 10 yo alone for half an hour unless he wants to come with me. Not a big deal half a dozen times I don’t think. [ Reply | More ]

I've done this too. It's more to make you feel more comfortable. He will be fine. [ Reply | More ]

My dd would do a similar trip at that age at that time. Generally she preferred scootering up CPW. Busses are also great there. And Via is easy and not too expensive for short distances. She would also take the subway but generally she wouldn't chose to subway 20 blocks on the UWS. [ Reply | More ]

It seems like travel is new this school year. I'd probably start as you're saying - travel alone there and pick up to come home. I suspect after a short while you and she will get comfortable with the trip back as well. 8pm is on the cusp I think (7pm would be an easy yes and 9pm for me would be a no). [ Reply | More ]

np: Does anyone really hear about middle schoolers having trouble commuting alone or going to activities like this alone? I mean, in places like this with a lot of pedestrians, etc? I don't... so, I wonder what the main concern is? [ Reply | More ]

Op: it is just sort of new for us. And it will start getting dark. Just wanted to see others’ experiences. I let him commute to middle school alone the second day. [ Reply | More ]

Teach him to protect himself: Have him learn to yell--Leave me alone! Help! The more he practices the more it will seem fine if he needs to. Can he wear a whistle too? My dd who is 20 has had some issues walking home (creepy guy following her down the block) Teach him not to rely on headphones while walking so he's aware of his surroundings. These things come in handy at any age. [ Reply | More ]

He made it there no problem! Sent the sitter to pick him up. Maybe in a time or two he can come home alone. Once he is comfortable. [ Reply | More ]
