Just moved to burbs and DD started school. I hit it off with another mom and she asked me for coffee. During our initial meeting, I happened to mention that we are renting our house and would be looking to buy in the neighborhood sometime in the future. This mom works a realtor, and when she asked me out for coffee, she said maybe we could also walk with our drinks and look at a few places together. Now I can't help but feel like she only cares to be friends for business purposes:( Should I still go? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

How many homes can you look at while on a walking tour? [ Reply | More ]

I would still go. I wouldn't over think her motivation for having coffee. If she does get a little pushy about using her services you can always just deflect and say, "Yeah, we're not really ready yet. Maybe next year." [ Reply | More ]

Depends. Maybe she really is trying to be helpful, maybe she sees a potential client. If you’re planning to be in the market relatively soon, I don’t see the harm; if not (or you’d prefer not to work with her), just say you’re not interested in looking just yet. [ Reply | More ]

Broker mom here : I went into selling real estate because I'm reasonably extroverted, and I like talking to them and helping them. So maybe she genuinely likes you; maybe she's a user who will drop you the minute you buy a home. But right now, you can't tell... if you do like her, try to give her the benefit of the doubt. Even if you like her do you really want her to know all of your financial info? You can say you’re not ready. [ Reply | More ]

You may be right but I guess the question is, does it matter a lot to you? When we moved to a new town our realtor ended up being our immediate neighbor who we got to know as a neighborhood friend and also someone giving us advice about housing. She did a great job as our realtor and we still consider ourselves friends with her. [ Reply | More ]

I’ve noticed that several of the “mom friends” I’ve met over the past couple of years have had an ulterior motive (mlm, real estate, etc). So tacky [ Reply | More ]

let it be known you already have a realtor- then, see if she is still interested in connecting. There's your answer. [ Reply | More ]

If you really are interested in buying, go! And if you are in the suburbs of NYC, so goes the hustle. Don't hold it against her, she's just trying to hold it all together. I like you because you want a friend who isn't going to make the relationship quid pro quo; but, 30years into living in NYC, I've accepted that it's the Tri-state way. [ Reply | More ]

If you are uncomfortable but still want to pursue it as a friendship, then suggest having coffee only. [ Reply | More ]
