We live in the city and kids go to school here and DH wants to buy a “summer house” to use on weekends in Scarsdale. He just likes the town, has some friends there, and it’s an easy commute back and forth. The house we are looking at is $1.3m for 4br with finished basement and small backyard. Is this a crazy idea? personally I would go elsewhere than scarsdale - somewhere a bit more rural bc weird to have summer house in suburbs. For example bedford hills, westport, Redding ct are all lovely and a bit more of a contrast/ less of a suburb. [ Reply | More

I think if you could spend the whole summer there it might be worth it. Just weekends, probably not. We have a condo by the beach (1400 sq ft) where we live in the summer and a house in the burbs (2400 sq) where we live the rest of the year. They are 40 miles apart. I sometimes think we should flip that and live in a condo in the burbs and a big house by the beach. That way we could host lots of people in the summer. Our far flung friends would much rather come to the beach than the burbs to visit us. [ Reply | More

If you have the money for it, I guess it isn't "crazy", but it is kind of weird. I live in the area, and I guess having a backyard etc gives you the country feel, and the town of Scarsdale is nice, but go over to Central Ave, for example, and it's farm from nice and relaxing. [ Reply | More

I lived in the west village and moved to Scarsdale. If your husband has friends here I think it's not so crazy an idea as you likely could have a lot of fun with them on the weekends. Also, Scarsdale is not that far ( I make it there in like 25 mins) from Greenwich....where there is world class shopping and incredible beaches. Scarsdale itself has a town pool that kids love and several private clubs. We are also very close to Rye that has a lot of beach clubs. I'm surprised you found a house for that price...I'm looking in that range and it's not that easy to find one here for that.....you have to double check you are buying in the scarsdale school district...not Edgemont (not to be confused with Edgewood which IS in the Scarsdale School District or New Rochelle....occasionally a listing will have Scarsdale listed but it's not really Scarsdale proper.
