Just booked a trip to New Orleans for Rosh Hashana break - very end of September. Going with DH, who loves jazz and teens. What are the "must see" for us? I want it to be special for DH, as he has a special birthday. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Stay at Hotel Peter and Paul. It is outside the French Quarter and a great property. [ Reply | More ]

St. Charles street car; cemetery tour (go with a guide--we like Free Tours by Foot) lots of history in those graves; maybe Jazz at Preservation Hall--buy tickets in advance; Canal Street Ferry to see the Mississippi River--you can cross to Algiers and walk around a bit or come back on the next ferry); Frenchman Street (your kids may not be able to get into many venues, but there's street music as well); Audubon Zoo; Snug Harbor has jazz and allows teens [ Reply | More ]

I really liked the Ace Hotel -- it's in Central NOLA, you can walk to French Quar but not in the thick of things. It has an AWESOME rooftop bar and pool. Garden District is technically walkable from there as well. Friend who works at the food network recommended a restaurant called Le Petite Grocery, which is in the Garden Dist, I LOVED it, it is local specialities with a fine dining flair and not touristy at all. I would for sure do an evening stroll through the neighborhood (which has a ton of the cemeteries) and stop in there for dinner. If you like music try to hit the Maple Leaf, it's locally beloved and would have great sets any night of the week (though it's not in the center of things) I loved walking around Treme and seeing the Backstreet Cultural Museum for a change of pace (it's a small museum about the culture of street krewes and Mardi Gras). If you do Treme and Backstreet, Willa Mae's is right there, AMAZING. I also seriously loved the Mardi Gras float museum though it is super touristy. [ Reply | More ]

I wouldn't walk to Garden District from the Ace Hotel. I would take the St. Charles Street car. Maple Leaf is for 21 and over. [ Reply | More ]

^^^ Isn't Ace Hotel in kind of a bleak neighborhood--especially at night? I would stay closer to the French Quarter. [ Reply | More ]

Streetcar is awesome. I didn't stay at Ace, but asked a local what is a must visit and she steered me to the rooftop bar. I personally loved the location, it is in the Central Biz District and yes they roll up the carpets in the evening like most other metro business districts and in that sense it is empty and I guess in that sense "desolate" and keep your wits about you. It didn't strike me as though my life was in danger every minute at night walking around there but you could always Uber right to the hotel. Also I imagine with teens they could enjoy the pool and you the lovely bar that's right next to it overlooking the city. I'm a NYC-er so all of the route I mentioned were no big deal and I loved walking around NOLA (esp during the day -- Treme/Backstreet and Willa Maes were all days trips), and Uber was cheap and plentiful if I didn't feel like walking. I enjoyed the Quarter but personally it reminded of Times Square (i.e. an amusement park made for tourists) so I preferred to spend time in other areas, and especially, other dining establishments, of which there are many. Willie Mae's Scotch House is a mile from the Backstreet Cultural Museum. Both are in the Treme (pronounced Tre-may. It's not a neighborhood with tourists walking through it. I love New Orleans, but don't be stupid in where you walk, especially at night. It's easy to get to the Backstreet Museum from the Quarter, but I would take a cab to Willie Mae's. The French Quarter is a long walk from the Ace--I would want to be closer to the Quarter. It's also called the Central Business District--the CBD--not to be confused with Central City--one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in NOLA. [ Reply | More ]

Nice! We went in March but had DD with us, so I can only recommend the family friendly stuff. Definitely go to Preservation Hall and to Cafe du Monde for beignets. We took a carriage tour, which is kitschy but fun. [ Reply | More ]
