If you had nice quality cabinets that were a pecan colored wood, would you paint them? Thinking of painting them white. I have black granite counters and floors and stainless appliances. I have some furniture in my living room and bedroom that is similar in color to cabinets. But maybe white paint would be cleaner? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Thanks. I feel like pecan isn’t that dated. They are fairly basic with some simple crown molding at the top. If they were cherry or oak or even a dark wood maybe I’d paint. The pecan color seems less dated. Even though they are 17 years old! [ Reply | More ]

Op: the thought of changing is sort of exciting as well, it is really the only thing I can do that won’t cost a fortune. [ Reply | More ]

What style are the cabinets? I would not paint flat or Shaker style but would probably paint any sort of raised panel. I would be more likely to price out a new countertop and knobs/pulls. I like this look: https://www.thertastore.com/rta-blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/4-4-17_RTA1-Pecan_Shaker20170403-4-qetenf.jpg [ Reply | More ]

So is painted white cabinets and black granite (and I love white cabinets). I think the problem here is the granite. Something light and honed would be fresher. [ Reply | More ]

Way too expensive. To change the floor I would have to remove all cabinets. Can’t change counters if I can’t change floor. [ Reply | More ]

Why can't you change counters without changing the floor? [ Reply | More ]

Because the floor is black granite. Why would I have a black floor and different counter? It is a small kitchen. having three different materials is too much. If the floor were the same as the rest of the apartment it wouldn’t matter so much. I started out wanting to change the floor and counters. [ Reply | More ]

You can go ahead and paint the cabinets but I think the real problem is the black granite floor. Is it shiny? Could you have it etched or honed? And yes, three materials is fine. That's what most people have. [ Reply | More ]

It is shiny and I hate it. Three materials in a small kitchen that opens into my foyer seems like too much for me. I will redo it all one day but today is not that day. [ Reply | More ]

Ok, so I personally would focus on saving up for the floor. You hate it and nothing will ever look good to you as long as you have to look at that floor. Do you want it to be the same material as the foyer? And I am struggling to understand why you would have to remove the cabinets to redo the floor. Do you mean that you would have to move an island? What is your long-term goal for the space? Would you be willing to try peel-and-stick tiles or a floor mat? Painting cabinets is a big step, even if cheap, and I wouldn't make that my first fix. My contractor said it had to be waterproofed. I live in a condo. So many strict regulations. I am doing a total bathroom Reno right now as bathroom is original from 1930. Kitchen was updated 16 years ago so it isn’t as necessary. Things in the city are massively expensive and I’m not up for dumping too much money into removing a floor on a tiny kitchen. One day I will redo everything in the kitchen but today is not that day. Maybe I will look into honing. The shininess is what I hate the most. Could I home the floor and leave the counters shiny? Honed is a soft matte finish. On black granite it kind of looks like soapstone. You can have polished granite honed in place. [ Reply | More ]

Different strokes. I think recessed panel dark wood cabinets and shiny black granite sounds pretty horrific. I'd be happy with the kitchen in the link but would change what op is describing asap. [ Reply | More ]

Op: the cabinets are not dark wood. They are not dated cherry or anything. My pulls are not dated looking at all. I have all stainless. If wood and black don’t look good together then painting cabinets white is what modernizes it the ost. I’ve been looking at magazines and there are tons of black and white kitchen stuff. Itbis a look that never goes out of style. [ Reply | More ]

I agree, but it's blah in large part because of the boring backsplash (i.e. white walls). With a cool tile or some stone as a backsplash, it would look much better. [ Reply | More ]

The over the counter sink mount is still dated isn’t it? I noticed that in this picture. This looks like a bad garden apartment renovation. [ Reply | More ]

Cabinets are recessed panels, like this. This isn’t exactly the color, I like mine better, but close. The cabinets are solid wood including the boxes. http://www.kraftmaid.com/square-recessed-panel-veneer-2ng6-square-praline-suede/ [ Reply | More ]

I have white cabinets and dark green (almost black) granite countertops with travertine floors and backsplash. I love it. I think it’s a classic look. Op, what’s your floor and backsplash look like? [ Reply | More ]

No backsplash and the floor is black granite tiles. I hate it but apparently to change the floor I have to remove the cabinets because it had to be waterproofed. Not up for spending that much now. [ Reply | More ]

The white phase will pass and then you will be left with painted wood. That is difficult to keep clean. I would leave the cabinets and focus on countertop. Are your floors and countertops really the same material and color? I can’t quite picture that [ Reply | More ]

The wood isn’t the problem but steel/black granite is a very dark/masculine theme. I’d get two large light colored kitchen mats and wood butchers block to brighten the space. Teal or burnt orange accents (tea towels/teapot/cookware). [ Reply | More ]

Thanks. I don’t thin I can have two mats. This is a small city kitchen. Like 7x8. I also don’t like leaving pots etc out. Because it is small it gets cluttered. One of the reasons I didn’t do a backsplash is there just isn’t a ton of space, and with a toaster on one side of range and a mixer on the other there isn’t that much of the backsplash area showing. and I hav a big hood for venting over my viking range. I do have some teal accents and a wood cutting board and a wooden bowl on the counter next to the sink. [ Reply | More ]
