I was just humbled by my 8-10 yo kids getting diagnosed with first cavities (one in a baby tooth but one - in a permanent one). I thought we did everything by the book and they would have perfect teeth. They brushed thoroughly with both electric and regular brushes and fluoridated toothpaste (I help them myself every other day to make sure). They rarely flossed but are getting used to floss regularly now. They don't eat much sweet stuff (and brush soon after when they do). They go for checkups/cleaning twice a year. They drink filtered tap water (which should have about half of original fluoride, NYC water). They eat reasonably well and drink vitamin D-fortified milk. They used to take gummyvites (multivitamin and vitamin D particularly) but now I think that might've been a mistake as despite brushing right after - these may be bad for teeth. What have I done wrong? I think genes play a big role (I've had bad teeth since my early years in the Soviet Union but believed it was primarily because of poor dental hygiene and lack of vitamin D and fluoride supplements). What has been your experience and what tips would you give please? I feel like I failed as a parent... [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

My dad was a dentist. Aside from poor dental hygiene, a lot of it is genetic regardless of care. [ Reply | More ]

Genetics are a huge play in here -- but also there is sugar in fruit and acidity in most foods you don't think about. Our eldest had terrible cavities due to blueberries and grapes when he was 4! [ Reply | More ]

I'm exhausted. Make sure the dentist puts sealant on their teeth and they'll be fine. Some people have the tendency to develop cavities. I had cavities as youngster and still have all my teeth (56yo). [ Reply | More ]

Do they chew ice? That can crack the sealants. [ Reply | More ]

It is about diet and genetics. NOT saying you feed your kids a bad diet. My kids have very weak enamel and had so many cavities in their baby teeth. It has gotten better with their adult teeth as those have come in. Yes, it is humbling. [ Reply | More ]

Genetics. I eat sweets like they're going out of style and sometimes forget to brush before bed, and I have never had a cavity. My DH hates sweets, brushes religiously, and he has cavities at very dental visit. I call his teeth "marshmallow teeth". [ Reply | More ]

My dc was dx'd with 14 micro cavities. Went for a second opinion and that dentist said first one was scamming insurance. He had NO cavities. [ Reply | More ]

Ok, well ask your dentist. I'd go with more sealants. [ Reply | More ]

It's their genes but also -- did you go to a new dentist? I don't trust dentists not to find problems that arent there. [ Reply | More ]
