Anybody thinking of Christmas gifts yet? I always say this is the year I finish shopping early so I won’t have to do a last minute rush. Let’s see if it really is :) [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I try not to purchase much, especially for my own kids. I want them to value experiences over things. [ Reply | More ]

Same here. It's easy for us, because we're atheists, so Christmas is just another day off school and work, to do fun things. When DCs were young, we let them believe in a jolly elf named Santa and that he filled their stockings, but once they reached the age of comparing the gifts that Santa left their friends, we explained that elves aren't real. When kids were young I was done in by back to school, the holidays, and two Fall birthdays. One year we did DS's party in January and it took some pressure off celebrating in December. [ Reply | More ]

I think this is the first year we're truly scaling back. Got rid of the 15 year old tree. We aren't doing gifts at home except for money. The only things we have to buy are the gifts needed for the extended family Christmas, which is always held at someone else's house. [ Reply | More ]

No tree and only money. I would hate this. [ Reply | More ]

To be honest, it beats buying more "stuff" every year that no one in the family really needs. They're all single adults. What they need is money. [ Reply | More ]

My mom would come up with neat ways to give money. She’d tape bills together or tuck it in a wallet, frame etc. Of course I loved money as a gift, who doesn’t, and it was sweet she put thought, effort into it. [ Reply | More ]

That's actually really cute, although I tried it one year with my kids and they just said next time just give me a 50. They weren't as impressed with fifty $1s as I thought they would be. [ Reply | More ]

I feel like my mom turned this way when I was a teenager. She just didn’t want to mess with it so I did it once I could drive. I bought it, brought it in the house, put it in the stand, put the lights up, decorated it, watered it and took it down. You gotta have a tree for Christmas. [ Reply | More ]

NP I think it's so sweet that you did this for your family when you were a teenager. [ Reply | More ]

I'll probably get another smaller artificial tree. I've actually eyeballed that Sharper Image instant christmas tree so much that it comes up in ads for me all the time. I think it's calling to me. [ Reply | More ]

I find that I enjoy last minute shopping. If I early, I still go out and shop at the last minute! Anyone else? [ Reply | More ]

NP. I find there are a few things that legitimately get me in the Christmas spirit. One is saying the words "Merry Christmas". The other is wrapping presents. The last is being in a Christmas decorated store with Christmas music playing and standing in line with everyone else, buying gifts. [ Reply | More ]

Nope, because my kids have not decided what they want yet and they will change their minds a million times between now and Christmas. It's a little crazy to tell them to make final decisions on Christmas lists in September. [ Reply | More ]

Yes. Every year I think what we need is not more stuff, but therapy, or a resolution to spend three hours all together cleaning out the apartment. But of course when Xmas rolls around, I'm there, online, buying shit. [ Reply | More ]

I make a list throughout the year as I think of things. So far it has hiking poles, a globe, fishing poles, and a necklace. [ Reply | More ]

I’ve picked up a few things for DD, who is turning 7. She’s been asking for an American Girl item that’s only available on eBay. I figured if a I waited until closer to Christmas, the price would only go up. [ Reply | More ]

I'm in the thick of it now. Goal is to be done with Christmas gift shopping before Halloween, and then I can actually enjoy the "holiday season" rather than letting it be one long to-do list of errands and deadlines. It makes for a very serene December when you needn't set foot in a store all month. [ Reply | More ]
