Good morning everyone! History Mom with Friday Fun Facts. On this day in 1522, the ship Victoria docked in Seville, Spain, after circumnavigating the world. Only 18 crew members - out of 5 ships and 260 crew members who set sail with Ferdinand Magellan on September 20, 1519, survived. On this day in 1901, President William McKinley was fatally shot in Buffalo, New York. Thereafter, the Secret Service’s mission shifted from investigating counterfeiters to protecting the president. Btw may I ask a question? If one wants to research a particular historic era or place, is the newest book definitely the best? Or how does one choose/determine credibility? [ Reply | More ]

HM Interestingly enough, when I check out a particular topic on the Barnes & Noble site, for example, I'll get a list of books, with cover art, but they tend to be the most recently published because that's what B&N is selling. That doesn't mean that newest is bad, and if the book has decent sources/bibliography it can point you in new directions. Getting there is half the fun. [ Reply | More ]

They still do stuff with counterfeiters. I got a fake $20 out of an ATM that was refused at the next place I tried to spend it. I brought it into the local police and I got a visit from 2 secret service like a week later. [ Reply | More ]

Ha. I was so freaked out that I gave it to the police without ever asking for a refund from the bank. It was kind of fascinating, though, to see how close it was to real until you held it up to the light and you could see that the security feature stripe was just printed on, not embedded. This happened to me in Turkey -- was paying with some Turkish bills and then some Turkish police/military (I don't know, they were armed and intimidating) showed up. One of the bills was counterfeit, but as it was obvious I was a clueless tourist, they just took it. [ Reply | More ]

Not that much, I should probably have been more scared. I think the cashier just called them over because they were nearby (patrolling near the tourist site). And they were actually quite nice, the intimidating uniform and guns aside. They just said, this is fake so we need to take it away. [ Reply | More ]

^ basically, I think the cashier just wanted to tell them, hey, there is someone here scamming poor clueless tourists and giving them bad bills, not that they suspected I was part of some counterfeiting ring. [ Reply | More ]

This. Also, the fact that the ship could be crewed by only 18 people (the Mayflower had a crew of 25-30 officers and men) tells you that it was tiny ship, and setting out across two huge oceans. [ Reply | More ]

He wasn't just circumnavigating, he was spreading Catholicism and getting rulers to submit to Spanish rule. He was killed by a poison battle in a battle with Lapu-Lapu, who was a warrior chief and did not want to submit to Spanish rule. [ Reply | More ]

OR. That is true, but that was not his main goal. He was a great seaman, had iron will and discipline. Survived mutiny by the other captains, I believe one of the 5 ships even left him. [ Reply | More ]

Seriously! I read a hole book about Magellan's life, and while I agree that what the colonizers were doing was atrocious, the man himself was an amazing character! Brilliant, determined, pedantic about every detail, very diplomatic, hard working and courageous. [ Reply | More ]
