my 5 year old son is hyperactive and impulsive much of the time and has a hard time self-regulating. However he can focus on books and puzzles and other activities for long periods and he doesn't zone out. In the range of normal or potential ADHD? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Normal. But at 5 you are already behind the curve on teaching him to be ready for classroom behavior. If he can focus on things HE is interested in, he has what it takes to be taught to focus on other things, too. [ Reply | More ]

If he can focus on things HE cares about, he’s just 5. He just can’t attend to things that are of no interest to him. [ Reply | More ]

Do you have suggestions for this? He has been in preschool for 2 years. [ Reply | More ]

May be too early to tell. How is he at school? If not a behavioral problem, and the academics performance is on target, I wouldn't worry for now. Keep an eye on it. Sounds like my ds at age 5. The impulsivity and hyperactivity got better with maturity, but eventually he was diagnosed with adhd in his teens and now takes medication. [ Reply | More ]

He just started K so not sure. Teachers didn't have an issue in preschool. But I find myself constantly saying "don't do this, don't do that" which I hate. He can calm down with a book and with one on one attention but often trouble in groups. [ Reply | More ]

See how the year goes, but to be honest it will have a LOT to do with the teacher (and the school). Kids like this need lots of exercise and an attentive teacher who won't pathologize the behavior and can manage it by redirecting and giving a kid what he needs to get back into control. An evaluation by a child psychologist over two days (only 1/2 days) and a report with the findings. We did this when DD was 5 and the report has been so helpful. DD was diagnosed with ADHD, but we did not medicate right away. [ Reply | More ]

OR below- my kid could not function in school without a para when he was in K. There is a different level of hyperactivity that you see in some kids that parents who don’t have them can’t even relate to. We did not do a formal a evaluation until he was 7 because yes, 5 is too young to diagnose adhd, but it was 100% obvious that something was going on. We didn’t medicated until he was 8 [ Reply | More ]

My son was like this and had ADHD. Is he disruptive at school? Does he have trouble with transitions? Is it impossible to keep him seated during a movie or dinner? Does he run off at stores etc? My son was so far out of the range of normal with his hyper activity. He broke furniture (cabinet) from having to stand an lean on it. We didn’t test him until he was 7. But he was evaluated at school and had an IEP with lots of services from K on. Once medicated and with intervention at school he totally changed behavior. [ Reply | More ]

School--not in prek but too early to tell in K. Teransitions--sometimes a lot of trouble. Sometimes not. Seated--very hard with dinner at home, not hard at a restaurant, movies no prob. He doesn't run off. [ Reply | More ]

It might just be age. If he isn’t not being disruptive then it might not be an issue. Though My son was fine in pre-K because the day was shorter and the student teacher ratio was way lower. It became a real issue after a month or so in K. He also hated it and didn’t want to be there. [ Reply | More ]

This is what I'm worried about. The long days are really difficult for him. Maybe e it's not ADHD but he often has a tough time--clearly tougher than his peers. How have you helped your son? And what did you do when he decided he didn't want to be at school? [ Reply | More ]

The long day is hard for a kid with adhd. My son would pretend to have hurt himself to go to the principals office. Ha. He also took up 95% of the para’s time (he got his own para the next year, this was just the one they had in every K). I would just play it by ear. If he isn’t doing well it will be obvious and the teacher will want to speak to you. If he seems to be really struggling you can request an evaluation. [ Reply | More ]

He is doing fabulous, thanks! Early intervention is key because their confidence gets shot when they aren’t able to behave the way they are supposed to. [ Reply | More ]
