People with business sense I have a situation where I would be grateful for advice: I am the director of sales at a small company with a niche client market. Without my knowledge the owners hired an hourly salesperson to make cold calls for meetings. I am furious about the sneakiness of this as I run sales, but also this person has been getting them meetings with low level people on the buy side, while I know higher level people at the same buy side firms! In this industry even the high level people can’t be decision makers (their clients make the vendor hiring decisions), so a meeting with a low level person is really useless. Besides this being stupid to not communicate with me should I have a contact at the same client, I find this sneaky and I am angry. How would you handle? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

No, start up. I bring in a lot of business, just often it makes sense if I take the meetings as they are not great at sales. They want the meetings it appears. How can I demand transparency? Need a good approach. Too furious to even speak to them tomorrow [ Reply | More ]

I'd question if they understand the sales cycle for your industry - given that they do not have contacts themselves. The fact they've brought in someone to cold call means they are impatient about sale progress. You need to either educate them on your current funnel, outlining how long it takes to close a deal, what your deal flow looks like and schedule regular meetings on sales progress. That they went behind your back for this does not bode well. You should question if you should take your book elsewhere. Working for people who don't get how to sell into a particular industry can be deeply frustrating. [ Reply | More ]
