A guy I am trying to impress just asked me what my five favorite movies are - either currently or all-time. Please tell me yours because I am drawing a blank and trying not to tell him shit like "Diner" and "Goodfellas" but also don't want to say "Joy Luck Club" or "Parenthood" ... help! Because it is 100% from a man's perspective. Its all about male friendships and the women are treated really badly. Not that men specifically like to see women treated badly, but if the roles in the movie were reversed, NO MAN would like this movie. Its got some great scenes, amazing dialogue and acting, but it is practically anti-feminist. See it again, and you'll see. [ Reply | More ]

OP. So OK I'll ask - if you were looking to date after a 1st marriage, what answers to this question would make you NOT want to date her? Would you seriously consider any woman who said "EAT PRAY LOVE" or would you look twice if she said Moneyball? I've never seen the first or read the book but the book was better than the movie in the 2nd case. [ Reply | More ]

DH responder here. There's no right or wrong answer. My wife and I have only moderate overlap in movie taste (we agree on spy flicks, superhero movies, and good sci-fi), but that's never been an issue. I'm glad to watch wacky movies that I'd never have seen, and she's the same. If you're a huge fan of a type of movie, own it. If your taste is ecclectic, own it. It's all good. [ Reply | More ]

NP I think there's probably a huge gender divide on Pulp Fiction. When it came out, I bought a ticket for Saturday afternoon then went about my errands. When I got back to the theater the ticket holders' line was all college age white guys. I almost didn't go in, because I assumed I would hate it (but I'm cheap, so I went in and enjoyed it). thanks. Maybe I'm overthinking it. I should probably know this by now, but I was alarmed by my initial list because I realized they were either strong female protagonist movies or they were "Band of Brothers" type situations where it might look like I'm pandering. But maybe just be honest. Although, I did that in my first marriage and my ex always made fun of me for the movies I liked. [ Reply | More ]

OP. OK I totally get this, and I love Goodfellas, but I'll be honest, it doesn't lend anything to telling someone about what you're like. Everyone likes Goodfellas. It's a fantastic movie, almost perfectly shot. It's as useful as telling someone you liked the Godfather. [ Reply | More ]

sorry to hijack but... I hate this aspect of dating so much. I just had a short relationship with a guy that I thought might get really serious. he was really sweet and had an interesting life that i wanted to know more about... but the only way he knew how to try to relate and get to know each other was to talk about his favorite bands and all the shows he has seen live, and to recommend movies to me that he loved and thought i should watch. I honestly feel like people's taste in media properties has very little to do with their compatibility and men are so immature when they think this is how to know if a woman is right for you. it's only one step up from "i wish i had a girlfriend who loved video games as much as i do" end rant. If he’s a pop culture junkie and you list stuff like eat pray love, yeah it would probably make him think you have cheesy taste. But at his age if he let that stop him it would show pathetic immaturity. So if this list is a test for him, it could also be a test for you. [ Reply | More ]

This is a great opportunity to see what kind of person he is. Be honest about your faves - even the ultra cheesy "chick flicks".
