What are some good "matches" for rising senior DS in NJ. Doesn't care about sports, wants under 10,000 students and a self contained campus within 4-hour driving distance from Northern/Central NJ. Stats: Very strong public high school, but not elite; 3.75 unweighted GPA; all accelerated or AP classes; 1430 SAT; no hooks; decent but not exceptional extra-curricular. Will apply for FA so likley no early decision. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

OP: Great school, but I wonder if they're interested in garden-variety academically strong, well-rounded white kids. I've always had them in the group that only takes unicorns for regular decision. [ Reply | More ]

NP. I agree. His best bet (but they are on the small side) is to aim at several LACs. They often have more female applicants so men have an advantage. [ Reply | More ]

This. High school students are bombarded with college information, and they have the internet. He knows what he wants. Tell him to search. [ Reply | More ]

OP: Super-helpful. Congrats on the free-ranging. You do you. Meanwhile I'll parent my kid and actively engage in the college process because it's important and I haven't raised a college-obsessed kid. [ Reply | More ]

OP: I don't think alternative would be a fit, but we've discussed almost all of the traditional schools you listed. TCNJ and Lehigh are high on his list. We visited Lafayette and he wasn't into it. And if it stays that way, this may turn out to be a very quick, simple process for us. But I still have my concerns about TCNJ. Just wanted a better sense of what schools we should classify as targets based on his stats and the experiences of others. Wondering if there is a middle ground between the frattier schools (Bucknell, Colgate, Lehigh) and the alternative places like Bard, Vassar and Sarah Lawrence. [ Reply | More ]

Conn college is def a middle ground. Great theater program but not alternative, My DD got into SLC and Bard and it was too alternative. Similar GPA. [ Reply | More ]

Not sure if you are still watching this post. I suggest you look into College that change lives list and then pick based on the distance. These are all small LAC where you most likely will get a generous merit. [ Reply | More ]
