This may be a dumb question, but I'm new-ish here and I don't know the lingo. Below a poster refers to "my rising 6th grader"; I've seen that term "rising xth grader" before here in the past week or so. "Rising" means what? Aren't ALL students "rising" as they move up through the grades? Or does that refer to something else? TIA [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I don't get why people use the term. Just say 'my kid is going into 6th grade.' It's like people who use gifting as a verb. Ugh. [ Reply | More ]

It's a one word adjective that describes the child's situation. It's convenient to use. [ Reply | More ]

No. Rising is fine if you are just using it in the summer between grades. [ Reply | More ]

I think it's just more clear if someone asks over the summer. DD's school also used it in the spring when talking about future plans and schedules. [ Reply | More ]

Right, but that's an awkward phrase if it's not the point of the sentence. " My rising 8th grader is worried about making friends at her new school." "My child who is going into 8th grade is worried about making friends at her new school." [ Reply | More ]
