apparently, i'm more insecure than i thought. i'm a kmart and payless dresser. my sils are designer clothing trendy dressers. i don't usually care that much but we have my inlaws anniversary coming up next weekend and we are having a brunch. should i go out and buy something for myself and dcs or should we just go in our regular clothing? just wear your own clothes-I wouldn't by something just to "keep up" with SILs. Besides, people often really can't tell the difference between designer clothes and discount. [ Reply | More ]

Hmmm-to not being able to tell; I can. BUT it doesn't really matter if it looks great and suits someone. There is no substitute for some better, fallback items to mix into your whole closet. I did leave out a femme suit- to break up and pull together when needed. [ Reply | More ]

Go to Filene's Basement... I have gotten some great dresses there - brand names for great prices. I honestly think they fit better than cheaper dresses..... check it out. [ Reply | More ]

I'm not sure if this is really about them-or you. Think about it; If it's really you, then believe me, Spend some time w/yourself at a Daffy's, Loehmann's, Century 21 or Filene's. Try on some things that look good and make you feel good. Set a goal for budget and number of pieces. I really believe it's a good investment to cover your wardrobe options w/several good items for each season. Quality pices tend to have better fit and longevity and will serve you well. As an example, try for a good dressy/casual dress, a great pant, a staple, finished denim(skirt or pant), a seasonally appropriate jacket or other topper e.g. Cardigan, pullover, wrap. Add a good low or flat shoe/sandal + 1 dressier for Spring/Summer- the same+a great boot for Fall/Winter. You can get a lot of wear mixing finer pieces w/everyday ones. Do this for you. op: i thinks it's about family dynamics. not sure if that makes it about them or about me. i have good work clothing. and good dressy/special occasion clothing. everything else is very sloppy. it's these brunch type parties that always are a problem for me. [ Reply | More ]

So then, go to H&M and get some cheap and cheerful stuff, while it's still warm out. Dresses are the best way to be casual and pulled together, so focus on those and skirts that are easy and not too structured. If it's trendy you're after, H&M is about as much as you should pay for short-living looks. [ Reply | More ]
