I'm the OP of dalton with 98 ERB post below: You're all telling me that ranking Dalton highly is an important factor, but since there won't be a PSD talking to them for me, how do I communicate this? Just write a FC letter? What about the schools we like 2nd and 3rd place? Just express it in the interview but no FC? I feel like we are at a big disadvantage not having a PSD to speak for us. (DD will be at an ongoing pre K so the school does not help you exmit). [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

btdt, you can make it clear in your i love you letter. also, imho, babby can see through alot of the bs that people give her... be yourself, express your interest in the interview, but don't be over the top braggy, obnoxious, or kiss-ass [ Reply | More ]

ITD for Dalton being obnoxious and kiss assy is a requirement for admission [ Reply | More ]

np: It is not kiss-assy if you really love the school and think it would be a good fit for your dc. I think OR is correct, babby sees through the ones who are kiss-assy but don't really "get" the school and would be just as happy at another TT school. [ Reply | More ]

Still amazed by how Dalton had pulled the education wool over the eyes of newbies. Good luck to everyone who loves it but I will just never get it. [ Reply | More ]

NP: Dh went to D and would never even consider applying for dc. We toured to see what had changed, it is the same disorganized fake progressive. We let the dcs teach themselves is code for our teachers are lazy [ Reply | More ]

wouldn't say the teachers are lazy, just much more BS there than in other schools. [ Reply | More ]

I think that is taking it a bit too far. I have met some of the teachers & they really impressed me as intelligent and thoughtful & not at all lazy. [ Reply | More ]

For Dalton - let Babby or admissions person know they are top choice during parent interview. You could even ask whether they value FC letter. I asked Babby during our interview about FC letters and she said we did not need to submit one but I am pretty certain when PSD communicated with Dalton a few weeks before letters went out they asked PSD if we'd come if admitted and PSD said yes. Since you won't have that advantage I'd say FC letter def and i love you letters to 2nd/ 3rd choice. [ Reply | More ]

Just strange. I think people from outside of NYC originally make too much of private school tiers [ Reply | More ]

I think many people, native & not make too much of tiers. But thank god not everyone does. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know any natives that think too much about tier levels. The perception of which schools are the vest academically hasn't changed in so many years, and most of us just accept it but know all the schools have value. [ Reply | More ]

np: But isn't it actually the "natives" who contend that the only "good" schools are Brearley, Chapin, Spence & Collegiate? [ Reply | More ]

I don't get your point, sorry. This list of the best schools and which fall 1st 2nd 3rd etc. has existed in the same formation since our parents were in school. Dalton the exception of course, it is very good now I hear. What I am saying is we have accepted the 'tier list' as is but we all have grown up and seen students from all schools go on to great colleges, success as well as failure and we know school determines very little. Life-long NYer; Dalton is not "an exception of course." was always excellent, but was less traditional and more jewish than the SS. [ Reply | More ]

My point is that the "natives" do consider Top Tier schools to be TT. "Always have been and always will be" is the motto generally. And Dalton usually doesn't rank in the TT for them. [ Reply | More ]

Poster from above. Still don't see what you are trying to say. Do you mean the schools are not actually ranked this way? Are you saying it it he fault of the natives that the tier system exists? Just trying to figure out your point [ Reply | More ]

LOL, as if the Natives don't care about tiers (afterall, you guys came up with the tier system in the first place. But maybe the natives who went to non-TTs feel this way?) [ Reply | More ]

OP Here to ANSWER your question: We have always loved Dalton but last year DD was not old enough to apply. This year she needs to be in school and we like (but are not in love with) this ongoing pre K. We decided it would be wise to take the spot so that we have a solid fall-back if she doesn't get into any of the other K's we are applying to THIS year. So we can be picky now and not neccesarily apply broadly. We like the school she's about to start in, we hope it will work out, but we are still hoping for Dalton. [ Reply | More ]

you should take your cues from the school. If you don't interview with Babby, don't bother with FC letter because chances are your dc is not getting in. [ Reply | More ]

that sort of letter is not really effective. if Dalton wants your dc, only then would it be helpful to send a letter indicating very strong interest. [ Reply | More ]

Right, but it is not going to hurt & you don't want to make the mistake of writing it off just because you didn't interview with Babby - the school may actually be very interested. [ Reply | More ]

You don't need a PSD for this. Just tell them yourself that it is your FC. They don't require a FC letter but if you do send them, they will know where you stand. G/L! [ Reply | More ]

Relay it verbally, but no FC letter. Trust me, you are probably in a better position than someone with a PSD. DC got into Dalton last year (99 ERB) and we basically had to pick our FC to be relayed through PSD, but it put us out of the running with other schools who were neck and neck with D. If PSD is not involved at all, what difference does it make if she writes FC letter or relaying the msg to D verbally? [ Reply | More ]

More flexibility with verbal statement and I also believe it is more sincere when Babby can look in your eyes when you say it. [ Reply | More ]
