Please don't flame. I know what I'm about to say sounds ridiculous but given the level of competitiveness in the current environment, I'm seriously asking this: Should I somehow show TT admissions offices DD's 99 score on OLSAT and SB if she only got 98 on ERB? She got 99 verbal and 98 performance leaving her with 98 total. I fear anything less than a 99 will take her out of the running for the TT we want, which happens to be Dalton. Also interested in the 3 TT girls schools plus NBS. Have to tour and figure out what we really want, but for now that's our list. Will add some non-TT's too. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Your child's ERB score is great. You would look silly bringing up other scores. Is your child in public school now? [ Reply | More ]

No, she's starting pre K in the fall....she was old enough to test for public K and Hunter but too young for private so we just now took the ERBs. She didn't get into Hunter or Anderson and we decided to go private for pre K. [ Reply | More ]

if you have a psd, maybe she can mention it. If you are coming from public, I wouldn't. Sounds like you are going to public K, and trying for private. if you are coming from a top public, the school will speak for the score (if anderson, LL, ps9, etc likely 99). [ Reply | More ]

Yep. If PSD happens to mention 99SB (not olsat, that is silly), okay but don't submit it yourself. At Dalton, they do care about the essay a lot unlike other schools. Ace that essay. And dd will have to ace the playdate evaluation. At the end of the day, they want a good fit who really gets their philosophy and values. [ Reply | More ]

PSD will not be involved. I'm on my own. Current pre K is at an ongoing. [ Reply | More ]

I wouldn't mention it. Your dd is clearly smart. She will do well at onsite eval. Is she social and compassionate? Anyway, my dd also had 99SB/olsat and we didn't mention anything to them. Got an accept anyway. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks...yes, thank God she is a good and caring girl. has los of friends, is never unkind, is very aware and social. Mathmatically gifted which I know schools like in girls. No diversity or interesting parents, though. [ Reply | More ]

Dalton is looking for a specific type of child and so your DC's interview is more important than the diff between a 98 and a 99. Plus, they will conduct their own onsite testing unless they are visiting your preschool in which case they will likely talk to PSD on their visit. [ Reply | More ]

ITA. Not to mention that half the kids are prepped & they are completely on to the triple 99 thing. Diversity and/or interesting family are much more likely to get you in than another dime-a-dozen 99. [ Reply | More ]

I don't believe that is true. Prepped? How do you prep for IQ test? [ Reply | More ]

While, I know that some people do prep, I doubt it is anywhere near half. I think what is more important to Dalton is that you are into Dalton. I do think that an interesting family will get your dc a very close look most of the time. Any dc with a 95+ has a chance there. [ Reply | More ]

OP: We're not very interesting. :( I mean, we're nice people and we have a great kid but we're your average non-diversity non-FA family. I do tend to volunteer at school a lot if that is appealing to them. [ Reply | More ]

No, that is absurd. 98 is good enough & 95 would have been also - now it is up to you & the play date & school report - that is what will make the difference. If you show those other score you will seem hyper competitive & actually hurt your chance. The only time it is recommended that one have PSD forward the SB is when the child did not do as well as expected on the ERB [ Reply | More ]

The dc I know who got into Dalton this year had 95s & 97s. Don't work about that. Also, putting girls' schools above Dalton will get you a reject. [ Reply | More ]

Same for girls schools. EVery school wants to know if they're the favorite. [ Reply | More ]

True, I am just speaking from my experience. We had five of the seven girls' schools ranked above Dalton, so of course PSD communicated this and I was not surprised by the rejection. [ Reply | More ]

They do want families who are pro-coed and want progressive education. Not to mention families that support their work on diversity. Dc's who are self motivated (maybe more important since it's progressive and they won't drill)... [ Reply | More ]

Mine fit everything they are reportedly "looking for" but we didn't rank them high, which I think makes all the difference. FWIW, I know several dc there who are not "self-directed" but are still very happy there. [ Reply | More ]

It's true. Dd got into D and SS TT's we placed in top 3 but didn't get into any other school (all WLed elsewhere). I think there is a chance if you put them in top 3. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, I would agree with that. Curious, what did you choose - SS or D? [ Reply | More ]

D. I wasn't hung up on coed vs SS at all, but I did prefer progressive. [ Reply | More ]

99 on the SB is impressive. Did you get a written report with that? If not, pay a bit extra and get a written report. If it's really good, I'd just send it in along with everything else. I really don't see how it can hurt. I do tend to agree that once they've established the child is smart, they're looking for verbal self directed confident kids with interesting families who love Dalton, and support diversity and liberal tolerance. The most important thing will be the "playdate." Also, I would be careful with the PSD. Unless you know you can trust her, you shouldn't totally trust her, since parents get screwed by their PSD's on a regular basis. Ask around, and find out how parents felt she handled exmissions this year. [ Reply | More ]
