Oh, my god. My 5yo is making me nuts tonight He will not stay in his bed, has been coming out dancing around, kicked me in the butt, and will not stay in his bed. I finally lost it and screamed at him, and not he's in tears. On the one hand I feel guilty, but on the other, I am seething. WWYD? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I did apologize, but he still keeps coming out..."I want cold water, not room temperature", "I can't sleep" (he has yet to even close his eyes), "I need you to lay with me", "It's dark", "I'm having bad dreams" (yet you have not even been asleep)...it's neverending. [ Reply | More ]

oohhh...picturing the dancing kid coming out of his room made me LOL. But then I am not there yet. Just keep telling yourself it's one night, it will pass. [ Reply | More ]

op: unfortunately, it's not one night. It is at least once a week for the past 2.5 years. I'm so, so tired of it. [ Reply | More ]

I hear you. This would drive me wild -- I have good sleepers, but little patience. [ Reply | More ]

Nah, I've come to believe that almost all of this stuff is genetic. My dh and I are sleepers, so the dcs are too. [ Reply | More ]

OP: I am such a great sleeper, but dh is not. Unfortunately, seems that ds inherited his dad's sleep habits. [ Reply | More ]

Can you lay with him until he is asleep or will that set a bad precedent? (This coming from a mother who coslept with her dd and who still has to lay with her 5 yo to get her to sleep....ugh!) [ Reply | More ]

I do lay with him for about 10 minutes every night right after stories. I don't stay longer because for that 10 minutes, he crawls all over me, talks nonstop, and tonight kissed me with his tongue sticking out (ew). [ Reply | More ]

Here's something to try. Just stop talking to him period when he does this. One warning "it's time to stay in bed and go to sleep." And then just start walking him back. Don't rise to the bait, no reaction at all, totally silent w/ zero affect. It takes some effort but it worked here (with an often v. difficult DS). [ Reply | More ]

We put those plastic things over the door knobs so they can't leave their room. If my kids keep misbehaving at bedtime I just leave, And I tape down the lightswitch so party time is over. Once they are asleep I leave their door ajar. [ Reply | More ]

That's what I have been doing with all my kids and they are all teenagers now. And yes, there were phases when they would walk out of their room. Staying with them until they are asleep is one of the things you could try. [ Reply | More ]

My kids would never stay in their room w/o the plastic knobs. They learned the protocol pretty quickly & don't cry very long. [ Reply | More ]
