My 1.5 year old is very underweight, off the charts, and does not eat very well, he takes 2 bites and then is done. I have been to a nutritionist but she was not much help. Has anyone been through this? Any advice? tia [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

what does your ped say? You might want to check out Ellyn Satter's books on feeding & kids. Very helpful and she might directly address that issue (I'm sorry I don't remember specifically). My oldest has always been very small, but he was a preemie so started out that way. [ Reply | More ]

I am offering everything i can think of, it's not like there is one thing that he will consistently eat, it totally just depends on the day, some days he likes something and the next day he doesnt [ Reply | More ]

He has 3 meals and 2 snacks a day--sometimes he wont even eat yogurt and cheese, and everything I feed him i try to add butter to, just to get in as many calories as possible, but he is just not getting any bigger [ Reply | More ]

have you tried to guess the calorie intake? sounds like he eats a lot. my 1.5 year old eats french toast and fruite for breakfast or an egg and waffle...for lunch and dinner he only only eats baked and breaded chicken so i puree veggies and ground the chicken and mix it together. now that it is hot we get milkshakes and ice cream 3x a week as a treat. no real regular snacks...i try to offer nothing in between breakfast and lunch and only a treat after lunch and after dinner. let me rephrase that, he is served 3 meals and 2 snacks a day, he only actually takes about 2 or 3 bites of whatever is served to him. If i serve chicken he eats maybe 3 small pieces. i have tried ice cream but he doesn't like it. he does drink about half a can of pediasure a day though [ Reply | More ]

how long has this been going on? my son was an excellent eater until 1year too....i hate to say this but when i am desperate i give him pizza and he eats is all...he also loves english muffins with cheese. he will eat when he gets hungry. try taking away the snacks to see if he eats more at meals. when do you give the pediasure? we had pizza for dinner tonight, he ate about 3 pieces. Maybe taking away the snacks is a good idea. he usually has the pediasure at snack time. [ Reply | More ]

try that....i also offer several courses for meals...so if he eats 3 or 4 bites or something it will add to a total of 12 bites...little chicken, pizza, cheese, yogurt...as long as he takes a little of everything it will add up. i would save pediasure for before night...or after dinner to make sure that he is hungry. good luck. i know it is hard.... yes ! we have been through this ! try different flavor of yogurt (my son liked vanilla, but he didn't eat any other flavor). he also ate the Gerber fingerfood (star-shaped, I forgot the name). I also cooked a vegetable soup for him which he ate (carrots , peas, mixed up in the blender). good luck !!! [ Reply | More ]

I find my ds will eat more if i switch it up constantly--he takes a few bites of one thing and then stops, but he will eat more bites if it is something new. Lots of full fat yogurt, avocado, bananas and for some reason he loves those Gerber organic sweet peas. He also likes to take sips of milk between bites. [ Reply | More ]
