Has anyone gone against their doctor's wishes? 39 w preg and doc wants to induce me for pregnancy induced hypertension. I do not want to be induced and have no other complications. Not my first child either. Thoughts? What will happen if I say no? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

why? There are actually theories that mild hypertension is fine and the risks of induction are greater. BTW had it with #1 too and never amounted to anything [ Reply | More ]

you hired your doctor b/c you appreciated his medical expertise. i wouldn't say you have to blindly follow him, but he has a valid and medically accepted reason for giving his advice. i think you're a fool to ignore it. [ Reply | More ]

I was induced b/c of low fluid which was related to HBP. Can you see if they will induce with cervadil instead of pitocin? That and having my midwife strip my membranes is all it took with DD. [ Reply | More ]

My sister is a NICU nurse and she says that she would not go past her due date--she sees to many kids come in with complications (miconium, etc) from late deliveries. That plus the hypertension, I think I'd listen to the doc. But you have to decide for yourself. [ Reply | More ]

Hypertension is a pretty serious complication for both you and the baby. Get induced. If you say no, you'll probably proceed into a crisis that will require emergency intervention and puts your and the baby's life at risk. [ Reply | More ]

OP: so it seems that no one goes against their dr's wishes. I have done a lot of research on this and it seems there is no evidence that stable mild hypertension late in preg has material risks. I know that the dr. wants to prevent that 0.1% chance, but honestly I don't think that is worth trading into a 25% chance of c-section with induction. [ Reply | More ]

I think you're underestimating the risk of hypertension-related complications AND their severity, while overestimating the risk of a c-section from induction. The severity of the risk of the former far outweighs the severity of the risk of the latter. But if you're comfortable with your decision, then discuss with your doctor. [ Reply | More ]

op: I went with dr. advise for #1 because I didn't know my body in pregnancy, but now that I'm on pregnancy #3, I know myself pretty well [ Reply | More ]

I think, you need to think again. You are not a doctor. The internet is not "research". If you don't think your doctor is up to par then find another one. But to put your health and/or the babies health at risk because you fear a C section is not prudent. You have delivered vaginally before, chances are very good that you will again. Many, many are induced and have uneventful vaginal deliveries. Actually far more than end up with a c section. [ Reply | More ]

OP: I consider reading peer reviewed medical articles on the internet acceptable research. That is what the drs read too [ Reply | More ]

Yeah, but they know what it REALLY means, and you don't. Or else you could get to be a doctor by surfing the web. [ Reply | More ]

I think you make a mistake considering this to be the doctor's "wishes." It is the doctor's medical opinion of the best choice for you -- disagreeing is dangerous unless you are really qualified to make a medical decision, or get a second opinion. From a doctor. [ Reply | More ]

Are you doing your research online? I agree with the others. If you're not confident with your doctor why are you with him/her? [ Reply | More ]

You are minimizing the risk of pregnancy induced hypertension on the babies. Perhaps your dr is worried because of other mild signs, a little protein in your urine, a little swelling? other signs of pre-eclampsia? search DIC... [ Reply | More ]

actually, no. no protein, no swelling, no headaches, no pains. Otherwise I am in great health [ Reply | More ]

I was induced, delivered in 3 hours, no epidural, it was fine. Had high blood pressure and thought reason they induce is because there's a chance placenta can fail if go too far over. [ Reply | More ]

I had high blood pressure throughout my pregnancy. While my doctor was a little concerned and watched it closely she never pushed me to get induced. It really depends on the doctor. [ Reply | More ]

I was in the same situation and had the induction. Although the induction was hard, I would do it again. No reason to risk the complications of hypertension. [ Reply | More ]

Sorry to ask, but are you crazy?? What's the point of saying no....what do you know that would make you go against the judgement of a man who has probably delivered hundreds of babies?? [ Reply | More ]
