if it's a girl, as the great philosopher chris rock says. "to keep her off the pole" if it's a boy, hold on and hope he lives through his teen years. [ Reply | More ]

this is the question ain't it. i guess don't be crazy controlling and let them be but on the other hand be stern, clear, set expectations for them (ask Jews and Indians in med school about this) and use guilt. [ Reply | More ]

does that mean that you have more of a hands off philosophy, only interfering when you think something is going wrong? [ Reply | More ]

Upper middle class boys are usually pretty easy though. Most tend not to get in trouble because they're so sheltered. [ Reply | More ]

lol. every time dh criticizes or objects to something i do with regards to parenting or housekeeping, i say "go ahead and fire me" and that shuts him up pretty quickly. [ Reply | More ]

sigh. it was tongue in cheek. but in all seriousness, things get chaotic around here. when dh comes in and wants to know why i let the kids have a treat, he can just go ahead and take over the primary childcare work if he'd like to argue with them about why they can't have it. [ Reply | More ]

and I didn't mean "work myself out of a job" in a comic way. I mean, my job is to raise them to be functional adults who don't need to be parented. When I taught high school I told my seniors that--my job is to work myself out of a job. I didn't want them going off to college needing my help to understand a book or write a paper. I wanted them to internalize that. [ Reply | More ]

Teacher. The chief curriculum is: I'm here for you as long as you need me. It's OK to separate because I won't disappear. I know you'll dance back and forth for the next 18 years at least but I'm sticking to this spot. Secondary curriculum: This is how life is lived. This is what's polite, what's kind, what's good, what's bold, what's strong, what's empathetic. In other words, I live my life as I hope my children will live theirs. I teach by being, doing, and talking about all of it. I read, help strangers, pull my own weight, try not to lie or hurt people, etc etc. [ Reply | More ]

Yup. had a sitter for work hours with kid 1 starting at 15 mos. Stayed on through kid 2 finishing kindergarten. Spouse deeply (truly equally) involved with all aspects of kid life except scheduling & clothes shopping. But he does all the cooking and much else. This 'theme' has been on my mind quite a bit since I spoke about it at kid 1's b'nai mitzvah. [ Reply | More ]
