So you're springing for a $$$$$$$$ tutor "just to be safe". Beware. [ Reply | More ]

I'm not. I just don't believe you know several cases of people who were shut out b/c they hired ERB tutors. Unless you are an admissions person. [ Reply | More ]

I don't work in admissions, but I've been around for a while -- dcs are teens. I feel bad for the stress parents going into the process have now, but prepping for the erb with an outside tutor is a bad idea. [ Reply | More ]

Who said anything about a tutor. OP was asking for test prep ideas...nothing about a tutor [ Reply | More ]

come on, if they're tutor prepped, it's farily obvious. No school is going to want parents that are crazy enough to prep their kid like that, disregarding all instructions and warnings otherwise. It's a pretty good indicator for how they'll be interacting with the school over the life of their kid's tenure. [ Reply | More ]

ok, but there is a HUGE difference between at-home prep with mom and hiring a tutor. [ Reply | More ]

or: reading with your kids and doing real puzzles is great. your dc will tell the tester: "oh I've seen that before" if you try to prep with the erb puzzles. The tester will code your dc right out of tt dreams. [ Reply | More ]

Keep hearing about kits you can get to do with your kid. There was post on here yesterday about some tutoring place downtown that has a really good one. Anybody remember the name? [ Reply | More ]

The ERB is the company that administers the CTP3s and ISEES. I think the CTP3s are just tests they give in school that don't count. The ISEES are the ones needed to enter a private school. There are no testers in either case judging whether your kid has been prepped. That said it is tough to prep. Reading and general test taking strategies such as pacing, whether to guess or not, and looking for the easier way to do a problem are possible. for eg if comparing 2 columns, 2+3+4 vs 4+5+6 you don't need to add to see that column b is bigger. etc. vocab is the toughest but read all the time and talk about what a synonym is. ISEEs are for kids entering upper grades (usually 6th-high school). [ Reply | More ]

Do NOT prep. Tester can tell. Our PSD said 2 kids from our school were told they prepped. They lost a chance to get in to school they would like to. [ Reply | More ]

np Really? Was subtle--like kid went to work before instructions were given? Or did they come right out and say kid was prepped? I didn't prep my dc, but when report came back it said she was "familiar with testing process". Called psd in panic and she said that was fine, but I thought it sounded like prep was suspected. No, but the 99 ERBs and SO, had coded sentences in the report that revealed prepping [ Reply | More ]

How do you find a tutor to prep for ERB's? Wouldn't it be better to pay a tutor to show you the kinds of puzzles the child will be asked to solve and a list of the kinds of words they'll be asked to know, and then play similar puzzles with the child and integrate those words into your conversation? Then the child would be prepped but the tester wouldn't suspect, because what would the child say, Oh, my mom and I do puzzles like that. Would that be a flag? [ Reply | More ]

I agree, but if the mommy prepping is done too well, it could be mistaken for tutor prep... [ Reply | More ]

Just do it yourself in a fun manner. Don't use a tutor, otherwise the tester may ask,"have you done something like this? was it with your teacher or mommy or daddy?". "No, I did it with Mary who came to my home" OOPS! [ Reply | More ]

FWIW the only family I know that had a tutor ERB & SB started tutoring the kids when they 2. They had a guy come once a week and they still do, to help with homework. Both kids got into Trinity so maybe it worked. [ Reply | More ]

they must not have been caught because they got tutored over a long span of time (from age 2 til 4). maybe it's a problem when you hire a tutor for a shorter span, for a crash course-type tutoring. [ Reply | More ]

That's true. They have actually tutored all along, the kids are now in 3rd and 5th grade, so its a part of their life. [ Reply | More ]

Dont' do a tutor. Get a kit and do it yourself with your child. We used Blue Tomato for admissions help and part of the service was they have this amazing kit with all sorts of exercises and games that are very very close to what's on the test(s). [ Reply | More ]

If you get a tutor, you need someone who will make your child comfortable thinking about the kinds of questions that come up on the tests, not someone to "train" children for testing. [ Reply | More ]

i don't recommend the co. on W.58th st. Tutors are very nice but very young; every one said my child is doing just great on everything in the same way, as if told to, when she was not doing great on everything. A thin simple workbook on a single topic was $75. [ Reply | More ]
