Any parents out there have late talkers?? Mine is only saying about 10 words at 20 months. Early Intervention screened her and said she didn't qualify. So, anyone out there have advice on things I can do to help her (thinking those of you who did EI might be able to share some helpful exercises??) TIA [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I'm an EI SLP. I would model one word at a time for items the child is trying to obtain. Say the name of it 3X, and don't get too wordy. Accept approximations (eg "buh" for Bottle). Label pictures in books using one word and point to them slowly, giving her opportunity to practice. If things don't improve look into health insurance or do private therapy. And I believe she can be re-assessed in 6 months by ei. Unfortunately, it is getting more difficult to qualify for speech through EI if that is the only problem. Good Luck! [ Reply | More ]

Did not do EI but my ds was/is a late talker also. He had 4 words at 18 months, 20-30 by 2 and then about 2 weeks after his 2nd b-day he had a "word explosion". Several new words every day and even saying 2-3 word sentences. This was all about 1 month ago. My advice, just be patient. [ Reply | More ]

I had EI screening for ds at around 22 months and he also had very few words but didn't qualify because of his receptive language. The evaluator did tell me some tips for helping ds talk, but I never really did them, and at nearly 3, he's talking up a storm. His vocabulary surprises me now, because it seems so advanced, although truthfully his articulation is not good and I've been thinking about private speech for that. EI person suggested doing rhymes like "five little monkeys jumping on the bed" and stopping for the last word to see if dc will say it. You have to do it alot of times yourself first, so dc knows what word is next. [ Reply | More ]
