considering special ed. vs. SEIT in regular class for 3.5 year old with asperger's. anyone have experience with Manhattan Center or with Central Park Early Learning. high-functioning is a major understatement in terms of intelligence and speech, but there are sensory issues and a need for some physical therapy. IEP is coming up in one week and I still can't decide what to do. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Stay AWAY from Manhattan Center. It is not a good place. CPELC is much more highly regarded. [ Reply | More ]

SEIT in Gen Ed class will be approx. 14 hours total for the whole week -- would he be able to function in class without SEIT? Is he affected/overstimulated by large groups? Most preschool classes have around 18-20 kids. Special Ed is usually smaller class, more teachers. For preschool, I'd say more support is better. [ Reply | More ]

It has a really horrible reputation. The EI service coordination they provide is better than the school setting, which is routinely described as "Dickensian." It is not ever included in the list of the CPSE centers that people apply to. My EI service coordinator herself told me not to go anywhere near it. [ Reply | More ]

If he can function in a general ed setting, go for it. There have been some asperger's kids in my children's preschool (NOT a spec. ed. school) and they have gone on to regular private schools. [ Reply | More ]

are you talking about Manhattan Childrens Center or Manhattan Center for Early Learning...the former is a very expensive (but reportedly very good) new private school for children on the autism spectrum...the latter is a not very well-regarded cpse preschool....our dc is at CPELC and we have been extremely happy there ...it is really an excellent program [ Reply | More ]
