If your child was considered a "minority" would you write that on the preschool application? My friends think it will help us get into the schools, but we have such a small amount that it bothers me. Advice?? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

My child is a minority (Puerto Rican) and Caucasian. Didn't help us. [ Reply | More ]

such a small amount? as a person of color, i would never send my child to a school where she/he would be the token 'colored' or 'minority' in the class. one of the best parts about nyc is its diversity. [ Reply | More ]

I am not sure what you mean by 'small amount'? meaning your child is a quarter or an eighth of this race/ethnicity? Do you identify at all with the race/ethnicity? [ Reply | More ]

do you mean your child can "pass"? are you proud of the puerto rican half or are you trying to hide it to blend in? depends on your objectives. [ Reply | More ]

My child definitely is a minority. I would include it if there were a question about race/ethnicity. [ Reply | More ]

^^^if you don't identify as that minority, then you shouldn't add it. It would be clear you're using it to get into school, and it still may not help. [ Reply | More ]

really depends - if not visible i imagine it would cause more trouble than help. i.e., I am 1/4 guatemalan but would never put Latina on an application because no one would believe it [ Reply | More ]

do you identify yourself as Latina? I think that's the key. I know someone who didn't look Latina at all, but spoke Spanish and very adamantly identified as such. [ Reply | More ]

I think that's the difference. It's really about how you see yourself. I think you can convince people if you really believe it. You know? [ Reply | More ]

that is true. but there also should be a "minimum" amount of blood, i.e. 1/4 to "count" [ Reply | More ]

Well, since our gov't used to consider one a minority if they were 1/32 why not go with that number? I agree that part of it is how one identifies. [ Reply | More ]

I agree but I think 1/32 is pretty extreme especially in cases of affirmative action - i.e. people who have no identity with a minority group but can apply for things as minority and be chosen over a non-minority just because their great-great-grandfather was Cherokee or something [ Reply | More ]

^^ I had a classmate who came from a ridiculously priveledged family and was incredibly spoiled but was 1/32 native american so she broadcasted it all over her college applications and even applied for a scholarship based on it. It was crazy [ Reply | More ]

Well that's why I said "look" Latina. That's also why I said it's about self-identification and that it counts more what you believe (than how people see you.) [ Reply | More ]

if there's a box to check off, I would. However, the schools want visible diversity. [ Reply | More ]

Our personal experience was that it did not help with preschool applications but ongoing schools were interested in recruiting certain minorities. Some minorities look white so you would need to identify it on your applications (only about half asked ethnicity question) or mention diversity as an important factor in ongoing essays or interviews. If DC is at least half minority you could also consider using Early Steps for ongoing (K) application process. They don't really have a 1/2 rule but I found they asked a bunch of questions about our background, how we identify ourselves, how DC is brought up, etc. [ Reply | More ]
