they don't do an IQ test. THat is absurd. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, they do and the "draw a person" test is part of an IQ test for a child that age. [ Reply | More ]

np: Just because drawing a person may be part of an IQ test for a preschooler does not mean that the admissions staff at schools are administering part of an IQ test at the onsite evals. [ Reply | More ]

I think what she's saying is that the schools draw conclusion about the dc's ability or potential PARTLY based on DAP. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 07.23.08, 09:14 AM Flag

I don't know if DAP is an IQ test but it is used by all schools (most if not all) to show mental age of the kid or bec it's been a good indicator for them anyhow. [ Reply | More ]

This poster is right, they do an IQ test they just do not admit that they do an iq test. All of the TT have an IQ cut off and know the ERB is not the holy grail of IQ [ Reply | More ]

True. But kids with high scores get an extra look. A kid with low 90s or 80s would have to be an absolute STAR on playdate to be noticed. Lots of kids. ERB's purpose is so that schools can sort kids into different buckets. [ Reply | More ]

That's bec ERB is not required. They charge $$$$ for this - it's kind of like a combined child visit and ERB (not that they use erb but you get the point). [ Reply | More ]

They color a picture, have some free play in a classroom, usually end with a story time or a snack. [ Reply | More ]

we applied to seven schools and not a single one had free play. At each one there were specific tasks that my dd was asked to do. Usually draw a picture, do a puzzle, listen to a story and answer questions etc. there may have been 5 minutes at the beginning where there was a free play time to get used to the classroom, but that was the most. Some allow children to pick a game or puzzle they would enjoy in part to see what DC picks and in part to see how DC responds to instructions if game is new, etc. At one, my DC picked a new game he had never played before, the interviewer told him game instructions, and they played. This was in a smaller group session with an hour playdate. [ Reply | More ]

that makes sense, but what the OR described sounds like a preschool playdate, not an on-going school play date. [ Reply | More ]

I am not sure privates really care whether DC can read coming in. DC beginner reader but claims he was not asked to read in any playdates. [ Reply | More ]

My dc was reading well by the time playdates rolled around. Was asked to read list of words at Horace Mann. Wait list (but 5th choice, so not devastated). [ Reply | More ]

I'm not saying they only admit readers, I'm saying they made my kid read (probably to see if we were FOS). HM was far down our list as we didn't want our dc on a school bus. As it was, dc got into fc tt a block away from apt. [ Reply | More ]

It is worthwhile to tell DC what to expect re: playgroup - whether playdate will be one-on-one (example, RCS), small group (Dalton, HM), two kids (Trinity), or 8-10 kids (Town, Trevor, ECFS). [ Reply | More ]

Well, if the rumor is true that they only want alpha girls is true, maybe that is why they do it. Not that I think much of what I read here is true :) [ Reply | More ]

Seemed to be true to me. It was clear that they were not interested in DD (despite 99 ERB score). [ Reply | More ]

Our's too. As for Brearley, they had lots of girls there, but I am told that when they go to the classrooms, they get into smaller groups, and they are pretty much zooming in on the 2 or 3 they are interested in. [ Reply | More ]

You know, my DD looked lost to me too -- it was obvious that she was steeling herself to keep it together -- and she got in. Who knows what they are looking for. She is far from an alpha girl. [ Reply | More ]

np My dd is at Spence. Are a lot of the girls "alpha"? Yes. Most of the girls? I wouldn't say so. There are plenty of shy, quiet girls at the school. There HAVE to be; 50 alphas in a class would ensure chaos! [ Reply | More ]

A kid who can't do these things might have developmental delays--and most private schools don't purposely admit kids like that. [ Reply | More ]
