xpost: confused about the NYC school system. my dd was born 12/2005. when do i start worrying about "testing"? or pre-K programs? and where are the "good" pre-K programs in the city? i suppose there is a book on this... any recommendations? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

dd can go to preK next year (fall 2009) and would register in Spring 2009. PreK is pretty much just your local zoned school, no testing. The testing is for K, so happens during the pre-K year (for your dd, not until fall 2009 at earliest, although might be able to take a test that summer). Right now, the NYC cut-off is Dec 31, so your dd will be young, but there will be other late birthdays. [ Reply | More

You're welcome. I should add that Pre-K is not guaranteed, by lottery, so your dd may not necessarily get in. Some schools have bigger programs than others, so most kids get in, some zones very few do. [ Reply | More
