Why would someone asume i'm living outside of my means by this post?: Dh and I make less than 200K but in NYC that is not a lot. We're comfortable, but cannot live wildly. Bought our apartment a while ago but couldn't afford it now (or anywhere else), sending dc to private school only with my mom's help, etc. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

The haves and have-nots in this city are divided by how lucky they were in real estate. [ Reply | More ]

why would you let someone anon. person with their assumptions bother you? I live in Manhattan on 90k a yr. I own my apt but bought it many moons ago ( 17yr ago) but if I had to buy something now I wouldn't be able to. My kids go to private school but we do get some aid. I wouldn't care what others may say. Don't give this person another thought [ Reply | More ]

I'd say that you are very lucky that mom can help with private school. Although at that income you may have gotten aid, but then again that may have hurt dc's chances of getting in. At any rate, I would never assume you are living beyond your means. I am curious, though, how you save 1k a month? Is that above and beyond yout 401Ks? What are your monthly housing expenses. I am asking b/c we have a similar income and I am trying to fiugre out how to save more. [ Reply | More ]

yes, that is above our 401K, which we max out (only dh has one, I don't make enough). We just have it automatically taken from our checking acct into another savings account the day after we get paychecks. Our monthly housing expenses are @4,000 (including utilities) [ Reply | More ]

Sorry to be intrusive, but how much of private does your mom pay? How do you have student loans still? Our housing expenses, including utilities, is b/t 2900 and 3000 a month. [ Reply | More ]

dh has law school loans, which are *almost* paid off (hopefully this year). Forgot to say our housing costs are before tax returns, which gives us a lot back (between 15-20K/year) since we have lots of interest atm on our mortgage. Mom pays for all of private, which at the moment is just one preschool, as we have a 4yo and a 1yo. [ Reply | More ]

can't speak for them, but when i read your post i thought it said "we bought an apt but we can't afford it now" and then went on to add that you are sending your dd to private school even though it's not something you can afford. [ Reply | More ]

we bought an apt that has gone up so much we couldn't afford a comparable one now, and we are sending to private school because my mom insists on paying for it (we could probably swing it if necessary) [ Reply | More ]

Re your real estate, isn't nearly everyone in the same boat....although theoretically if you were to sell, you could afford something comparable, no? I realize it's beside the point. Reading your post made me glad I decided on private even though it freaks me out...our income is higher, and sometimes it still feels like not enough! [ Reply | More ]
