instead of talking to kids at the park my 3 yo throws toys their way hoping they will pick them up and play with him. I'm trying hard to teach him social skills he does well with children he knows but not always new children. he tells me i don't want to talk. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

seems ok to me- why do you want him to talk to the other kids? 3 yo is still young to worry about social skills, I think. [ Reply | More ]

i just want him to be able to easily play with other children. he has a bit of a hitting problem- very rare now- and will sometimes take toys from others instead of talking. I have noticed other kids don't really speak to each other either. His former preschool teacher but a lot of emphase on his "social immaturaty" I see him as a healthy normal boy. [ Reply | More ]

I'm also biased because dd's preschool teacher told me that she wants her to work on her shyness, so I am pretty defensive about this kind of thing. :) There are ranges of social when a kid is 3, I think, and we have to let them be who they are. So for my dd, I'm letting it go-- if she finds a friend at the playground, that's great, but if she doesn't, that's ok too. Maybe when she's older I will encourage her to be more social (she's 3 now too). You could schedule one-on-one playdates- maybe that would help him? [ Reply | More ]

OP- he is great on playdates and with his cousins. I've decided to let it go and back off. He plays great by himself and will let another child join him if they come over he's normal. teacher need to be careful- they can really freak you out! [ Reply | More ]

I taught my son at that age to walk up to kids he is interested in and say, "My name is Cory, whats yours?" He still does this 4 years later. [ Reply | More ]

I tried that and it work for awhile but now he seems shy and will suck on his hands. so I guess I'll just back off and let him be shy for awhile if he wants. he had a bad experience with an older boy who said "NO WAY" and ran from him. [ Reply | More ]

My ds used to talk really loudly near other kids about things he thought was cool, hoping, I guess, they would come over and play with him. It was funny and sweet and a little embarrassing! The teaching him to introduce himself is the best advice. [ Reply | More ]
