HELP with 15 month old: My daughter falls aleeps in my arms while drinking a bottle both at bedtime and naptime. Once down, she sleeps the whole night a good 12 hours. She will be starting daycare soon and they will not give her a bottle to fall asleep. Any advice on how to get her to sleep without a bottle? FYI - she is VERY strong willed so CIO may not be the best route for us. PLEASE HELP! [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

she'll be in the toddler room and that is there policy. They just turnoff the lights and have them lay down on cots [ Reply | More ]

have you talked to the daycare provider? They may have some good advice for you based on others that have been in the same position. Also, daycare providers have a way of getting kids to do things that I would never think were possible- getting 10 kids to nap at the same time on mats on the floor, for example, so it may be that the bottle just won't be an issue. She'll be extra-tired at naptime because of the stimulation of daycare, and everyone else will be lying down without a bottle, and that will be the end of it. [ Reply | More ]

i was thinking that...maybe it'll just handle itself? I was going to try and get it resolved before she entered daycare so there wasn't an extra added stress in her life but maybe thats not the best route? [ Reply | More ]

I would definitely talk to the daycare. On the one hand, she may not notice that she's not having the bottle, because everything else is different. But on the other, it's a new environment and it might be hard for her not to have the familiar thing to fall asleep with... I suspect it's not going to be an issue, but run it by them. Surely they've encountered something similar before. [ Reply | More ]

I would wait an see how it goes in daycare before you try and do anything. I bet she'll nap fine there. [ Reply | More ]

what about for night time? IS 15 months way too old to be having a bottle before bed (actually, to fall asleep)? [ Reply | More ]

I would just go with what works for you. I stopped the bottle at 15 months, and ds adjusted really easily (I told him we were now going to use a "special blue cup." I had been diluting the formula for a while, so by that time it was a cup of water anyway. I never CIO'd, and truthfully ds did not sleep well till he was 2 and a half, so if your dd is doing 12 hours a night, I might not mess with it, except very gradual weaning. [ Reply | More ]

So you diluted the milk with water and then switched to water in a sippy? Did he fall asleep while drinking his sippy? Or did he do okay being put in bed awake? My DD screams at the top of her lungs if I do this.. [ Reply | More ]

It was formula (ds was dairy sensitive) and diluted milk sounds kind of yucky. At that point ds was not falling asleep with the bottle though (I sang him to sleep, so bottle doesn't sound so bad!), so it's a different situation. Try the gradual thing and see if it works though. And I wouldn't worry about what's too old (except for milk and teeth, when she gets a few more). It all works out. I'm sure people would have told me that because I didn't CIO and because I sometimes took him back to my bed tha ds would never sleep alone through the night, and he sleeps great now. Why are you giving formula to a child over one year? [ Reply | More ]

At that age she is ready to switch to a sippy cup. Try avent with soft spout. In any case milk or juice at bedtime is a bad idea for dental health. This is a good time to make these transitions. She may be distressed for a bit at daycare and angry with you but she will certainly sleep eventually. Offer comfort and your arms but neither sweet drink nor bottle. [ Reply | More ]
