We're looking for a social worker for our 5 yo DS. He has always had separation anxiety that has interferred with him having any fun.He refuses to take any classes unless we are allowed to participate with him. He's even nervous if we're sitting on the sidelines. He has cried every single morning for the past 2.5 years when we bring him to preschool and then pre-K. We spoke with his teachers and his day camp director & they agreed he would benefit from some counseling. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

you want someone who has expertise in play therapy, not "counseling" per se - signed, social worker child and family therapist mom [ Reply | More ]

Ah! Thanks. I'm still confused by all of terms. We are in touch with social worker at his day camp. She's researching some options for us within our health insurance plan. So I want a child therapist with expertise in play therapy. [ Reply | More ]

yes. and, usually, a good child therapist will incorporate family sessions into their work, since young children exist within the system of their family and are dependent on it. anxiety issues in particular tend to respond best to integrated play/family treatment. [ Reply | More ]

I would be homeschooling. No way in hell would I subject my child for 2.5 straight years to something so obviously painful for him. [ Reply | More ]
