3yo dd has started this thing where she throws up if she is upset. mostly she throws up when she doesn't want to take medicine but we were away in the country last weekend and she developed a fear of bugs and threw up when a fly landed on her. i think she's just a sensitive kid with an overdeveloped gag reflex and will outgrow it but my sister just sent me an email saying this doesn't sound normal. wdyt? is it normal and is my sister just annoying? or should i really be concerned? thank you. i was (and am) the same way and so i think its partly genetic. plus, my sister can be a little passive-aggressive and i think is just being a pain. [ Reply | More ]

my little sister (around 4-5)used to throw up when she was upset...she was a drama queen. i only got a bit concerned when it happend often bc i feared she would not be able to control it (like a bulimic) but she out grew it [ Reply | More ]

my nephew used to throw up ALL the time when he was a baby/toddler whenever he was upset. my dds never did this and in fact, have rarely thrown up in their lives (only had a few stomach bugs) which is a good thing because i hate it. whatever, i thought it was so weird that my nephew did this all the time but one day i asked the ped. who said exactly the same thing as you did about the gag reflex. after a few yrs. my nephew outgrew it and is your average 10 y.o. who only will throw up if, indeed, he is sick. so, i'm sure it's no need to worry. it isn't the most pleasant, but there is light at the end of the tunnel (imo.) thanks to all of you. i was more worried about the psychological aspect but i think she's just a sensitive kid who worries a lot - and now, is worried about throwing up itself - and combined with the gag reflex, this is what we end up with. oh well... [ Reply | More ]

try not to make a big deal out of it- a friend had a 2yo who did what your dd is doing and she ended up making her dc have an eating disorder by making a big deal out of it. Had to go to feeding school, years of therapy. Ignore and dd will outgrow. [ Reply | More ]

she definitely doesn't have issues with eating and eating never makes her throw up (except for taking medicine). so i'm not really worried about it resulting in an eating disorder - more concerned that she doesn't have another way to deal with minor things like a fly landing on her! try to redirect if you can, but otherwise it is likely a phase [ Reply | More ]

how would i do this? i had been trying to tell her to calm down, would hold her hands, look her in the eye and breathe slowly and that sometimes gets her to do the same. but her new thing is to yell as she's crying, "i can't calm down! i can't calm down!" [ Reply | More ]

My oldest (6 y.o.) throws up very easily. When he gets very tired he'll just throw up and then fall asleep. It freaks other people out but we're used to it and the ped isn't worried. [ Reply | More ]

Well, he is an anxious kid, has trouble slowing down or being alone (to rest in the afternoon, for example) and isn't very direct w/ his feelings. Couple that w/ a quick gag reflex and it doesn't surprise me. Fortunately he has good aim when he barfs. [ Reply | More ]
