My friend was talking about doing time outs for my 13mo. I'm all for it (when she stands on the couch, stands on the cat, etc.) but how do you make this work and her understand? She is very verbal but I still don't know how to keep her in time out and if she'll really "get it". Right now all I have done is take toys away that she stands on and explain that we don't do that. Thanks for any advice. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

i don't like time outs to be punishment. they're more of an "im out of control and need time alone" sort of thing. i usually just remove the object of trouble, so to speak. stand on the couch. you're moved from the couch. stand on the cat, the cat is taken to another room. with an explanation of why. repeat repeat repeat. fwiw, i don't really see the prob with a 13mo standing on the couch. but that is another story. I feel like if she stands (and jumps, bounces) she could easily fall off. She can get up on her own and I worry that if I'm not watching for 15 seconds, if she gets up and thinks its okay to stand/jump then she could get hurt. [ Reply | More ]

soon enough, tho, she'll be standing on the couch, tho. the danger part passes really quickly. [ Reply | More ]

if she falls off and gets hurt that my do enough to teach her. keep saying no jumping and moving her but if she falls you can use that as a teaching tool. [ Reply | More ]

np. yeah. i sort of agree. it's hard but ultimately we can't protect our kids from everything. and we can't watch them every minute. [ Reply | More ]

my sil doesn't let her kids stand on the couch either. I don't allow ds to jump on the couch but see no problem with standing I hate going to her house. Her boys are extremly calm but not very joyful mine smile and laugh all the time but aren't always the best listeners. [ Reply | More ]
