Having a buyer's remorse about sending dc to a private school because of being surrounded by monied kids (not for me, but I wonder how dc will fare)... Our public option also was full of monied kids, so I thought it'd be the same, but I'm unsettled about this. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Just take it one year at a time. It is only K. You can always leave for public as opposed to the other way around much more difficult. [ Reply | More ]

I was hesitant at the thought of private school because growing up in Manhattan, I would see spoiled, entitled kids in many privates. Once I started touring, I saw that not all schools had the same vibe. We found a private school that is down to earth and regardless of the deep pockets (which we don't have) the families were very normal and nice. This place has a great sense of community. DOn't get me wrong, you have your label whores but you will find it everywhere. Take it easy and I hope that your dc will enjoy his/her school. GL [ Reply | More ]

I think I would be feeling the same way. But it sounds like the problem isn't just limited to private in NY, if that's any consolation. And you control what happens in your home. [ Reply | More ]

OP: I went to a public school in a so so burb and the kids were all about showing how much money their parents had and what car they're driving or what they're wearing. I thought maybe private school people might be less "in your face" about bragging about money, but I might be wrong. [ Reply | More ]

Is your child starting in K? Kids make friends without regard to the parents' income. What worries you? Children may mention differences, but they don't attach value or meanings to them at a young age. So and so may go to France during the summer; we may go see Grandma in Delaware. Are you worried you are not giving your child what other parents can give theirs? A loving, attentive parent is a priceless gift to a child. We're on the lower economic end of a very wealthy school (dc in middle school now), so we've some experience. When my dd sometimes compares us to other families, I tell her we match the teachers. I've met a wide range of parents and have a lot in common with many of them--we want our kids to grow up to be kind, grounded people. Your child's school may have parent groups and speakers that discuss issues of differences and privilege. [ Reply | More ]
