Need help with discipline. My ds just turned one. I feel like he's too young to really understand discipline, but I do everything I can think of (sternly tell him no, pick him up and remove him from a situation, etc.) [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

^^^ sorry - posted too soon. Anyways... I feel like he's getting sort of bratty. I know he's only one, but do you have any suggestions? Example, what do I do when he starts screaming for no reason except that he's pissed off or bored in the middle of the supermarket? Just deal with it or get out of there, or can I actually influence him at this point? [ Reply | More ]

You can't influence his behavior at this point. Distract and remove him. [ Reply | More ]

Did you actually do this with your kids or were you one of the ladies glaring at me in the supermarket tonight? [ Reply | More ]

Exactly. Hitting him and telling him not to hit others is very confusing to a child at that age. If you're in the supermarket give him different groceries to hold. Go at a time when he is well fed and not too tired so he won't be so cranky. Offer snacks if he'll take them. Distract him by pointing to all the different things in the store. I used to sing songs and talk to my daughter about things I was buying. This seemed to really distract her. [ Reply | More ]

try to remember not to be angry at him. his just trying to find his way. this doesn't mean that you should let him do whatever he want because you don't want him to be a brat that's not a nice way to be. Just use gentle distractions and see what works every kid is different. [ Reply | More ]

At what point to you switch from distracting him to enforcing a one minute time out, or something along those lines? [ Reply | More ]

I won't use time out till he is at least 2. But every child is different my 3 yo ds doesn't respond at all to time out so I've had to be creative. Just get to know ds and see what works. keep trying different things till you find something. [ Reply | More ]
