It has one of the best antepartum, L&D and NICU's in the city. If you or db have a problem, its a good place to be. [ Reply | More ]

Exactly. It's an excellent hospital. [ Reply | More ]

Flip side is that they love their interventions there. It's a great place to be if you have problems, and not so great if you don't imo. Delivered there twice, fwiw. [ Reply | More ]

np: I delivered there twice too and same experience. If you have uneventful labor not such a good place, they push interventions and want you to be done ASAP (they were totally swamped both times I delivered, anyway). And the post-partum nurses suck big time. [ Reply | More ]

nnp - The nurses are AWFUL. Nasty, cold, and very judgmental. I had an emergency c/s after 24 hours of labor and they were horrible to me when I wanted to put DC in the nursery late at night instead of keeping her in my room (DH wasn't there and I couldn't get out of bed). Delivered my second child at a different hospital. [ Reply | More ]

That was not my experience. Had 2 c/s there. Both times nurses were fine about keeping DBs in the nursery and bringing them to me if they wanted to nurse (and then helping me get set up). [ Reply | More ]

i loved it but i think it does not have as high a level NICU. now, thank god, for most of us that isn't an issue.but if it were some prefer to know its available. [ Reply | More ]

np: I know someone whose db ended up in SLR NICU (I believe it's a Level III) and they had a very good experience. Very positive. Not every preemie needs a Level IV. [ Reply | More ]

NP: But you don't know until you do. I had a high risk pregnancy and delivered at Cornell for that reason: best NICU around. [ Reply | More ]

I had an excellent experience there. best, nicest nurses and had me push for what felt like forever (longer than 3 hours) because baby was doing great and we all wanted vaginal delivery. in the end, got a c section, but the docs and nurses were fabulous. [ Reply | More ]

I had a terrible experience at Cornell with my second. My experience at NYU with my first was 100% better. Cornell's response time with their staff is very poor. Their staff does not take any accountability. I asked for an epidural as soon as I entered. But, after 2 hours, they could not find the attending anesthesiologist, Dr. Jill Fong. I've written many letters to patient services. But, they are protecting their own. Dr. George Sylvester at Cornell was the attending physician. However, I never saw him. I saw his resident who was extremely unexperienced and lacked knowledge. Cornell was rated as the number 1 place to give birth in 2006 by New York Magazine. But, I think that rating should drop b/c I've met several women who have had poor experiences there. Including a mom who got a Staph infections because their nursery did not catch the infection in time when her baby got it from their nursery. Cornell upgraded this couple to a single room, etc. So, that they didn't get sued. [ Reply | More ]

Wow--that's pretty shocking. Was Sylvester your doctor? Had you seen him before the birth? [ Reply | More ]

No, Dr. Amos Grunebaum was my doctor. I never saw Dr. Sylvester before the birth. He has a nice, calm demeanor. But, he let his resident do everything and Dr. Sylvester didn't take any accountability for me or my poor experience at Cornell. When Cornell's patient services interviewed him about why I couldn't get pain alleviation after 2 hrs of being admitted, he basically protected his own and denied everything. [ Reply | More ]

Actually, according to USNews rankings Columbia (CHONY) uptown is ranked #4 in the country for neonatology. Montefiore comes in at number 29. No other NYC hospital rates at all in this specialty. [ Reply | More ]
