For all of you who have gifted children. What do you think/What do you expect is their life going to be? What do you think they will be doing after high school, after college? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

No idea, I just hope they are happy. I have tried very hard to not set up unrealistic expectations. [ Reply | More ]

Hopefully they will not end up like many of the gifted people in Dh's family. Isolated, misunderstood, socially awkward or depressed. I have no expectations. I don't expect them to win the nobel prize I pray they are happy and fulfilled [ Reply | More ]

ITA. DD is showing signs of being much like BIL...very gifted but very isolated and socially awkward. [ Reply | More ]

Slightly off-topic: I went to Stuy, which included some bright kids, some gifted kids, and some profoundly gifted kids. Looking back on how people have fared, like most high schools, it's a bit of a crapshoot as to how successful people have become. Most did OK in life, a few did incredibly well, and a few really flamed out. No definite correlation as to how gifted they were in high school. [ Reply | More ]

No more than any other NYC public, but there was a higher percentage of gifted (but not necessarily a big percentage) and a smattering of profoundly gifted students during my time there, FWIW. [ Reply | More ]

They have to have the smarts to get top marks on the entrance exam. After that, it's what they make of it. Some will excel, others won't. That's life. [ Reply | More ]

Follow up question (np): why do we jump through hoops to get our kids into the right schools if in the end it is a crap shoot anyway? [ Reply | More ]

Because eduction is important and no matter how much we want to deny it, a resume and qualifications and name schools do mean something as you grow older. No one questions you you have less to prove it is just an easier life [ Reply | More ]

good question ! we know it's a crap shoot, but this is one of the few variables we can in fact influence (so we hope in the existence of a relationship between school environment and success later in life)... [ Reply | More ]

NP: I think the fights are nonsense but the motivations and classifications behind them and how people view you depending on what school you have been to and then what college etc. is sadly meaningful for later life. I think we all know this to be true but hate to admit it [ Reply | More ]

You really think it's meaningful? I don't know what school people went to (my friends yes but other people) and I don't ask. Maybe I asked when I was 22 but I've grown up and moved on. [ Reply | More ]
