Re: Giftedness. It is a real issue and a serious one. However, it affects mostly the highly/extremely gifted children, not the garden variety giftedness most of people are talking about here. Our society should be more open and be made aware of the serious issues these extremely gifted children are dealing with in terms of education and socialization. They are also children like everybody else and need help in growing up adequately. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I have a PG child and ITA. There are no real schools in NYC (public or private) that can truly serve his needs. He is a sweet, fun, social child, but he has some real quirks. [ Reply | More ]

Well, my PG dc is in a school in NYC and is doing fine. I'm not sure what you mean by truly serve his needs, but overall, we wouldn't choose any other option over our current situation. There is not school for PGs per se in NYC, but you can work with a school in a case by case. [ Reply | More ]

May I ask what school? I was told by the psychologist that tested him that it would be hard to find a right fit. [ Reply | More ]

It's a progressive tt. It may be hard, but not impossible. In addition, psychologists may not know everything. [ Reply | More ]

np; you can't make a school for PGs only bec of size of students. Davidson Institute is in NV and most don't want to go out there. I think most end up homeschooling. In any case, I think TTs and Hunter are good for EG kids. [ Reply | More ]

Both my dcs (like their father) are highly gifted, on with an IQ off the charts. We are doing more than fine at our TT. I think people over estimate their dcs needs as a gifted dc. There isn't a school that could be doing a better job with both IMO [ Reply | More ]

My dc wouldn't have been fine without the thoughtful accomodations our school is providing. Is your school provide any differentiated curriculum for your dcs? [ Reply | More ]

The program is advanced enough and their peers all quite bright that the only specialty curric for them is about 15 to 20% of their day. You do not need to provide a differentiated curriculum if you choose the right school, where are you if you don't mind my asking? [ Reply | More ]

I already said enough about our school. It is a right school, and my dc is getting individualized curriculum, not just 15% to 20% of the day. [ Reply | More ]

Glad for you, actually to be honest, it was your tone that was very accusatory as if our school or our choice of school was not addressing our dcs needs. We don't all feel that our dc needs special attention but rather to be in an incredibly challenging program with other very bright dcs. Not all of them are gifted, I don't know what their IQs are, but I think the key to raising a normal dc is to TREAT THEM NORMALLY and not be constantly pulling them in and out of normal curriculum to satisfy mommies ego that their dc is 'special' [ Reply | More ]

Yes your ego. My post hasn't gone downhill you just do not like being faced with the truth that your dcs would be doing far better if their mother wasn't so invested in singling them out to satisfy her own ego. I do think many parents (and the DOE) confuse "gifted" with academically smart. There are huge numbers of very smart kids -- that's why it's so tough to get into a good college since so many kids meet the standards. I've only met 1 or 2 truly gifted kids and they do need special education, but most academically smart kids don't. Sure it's nice if your kid gets to be in a class with only other smart kids, but your kid is not gifted. [ Reply | More ]

I'm not sure what you're saying. My dc is with other smart kids and is getting a tailored, as much as our school could afford, accomodation at a school. In this sense, my dc is getting special education. Why do you say my dc is not gifted? [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 07.21.08, 09:41 AM Flag
»
I don't say your dc is not gifted because I don't know your dc. But the vast majority of kids in the DOE's "gifted" program aren't gifted. I once read a good definition of gifted vs. smart (I'll try to find it). Very very few kids are gifted -- your kid may be one of them -- but most smart kids aren't. There are tons of very smart kids in this world but most aren't gifted. [ Reply | More ]

Correct. I'm sorry for hijacking it. What I meant was that I agreed 100% with the idea that extremely gifted children need special programs, but in NYC, at least, the programs are actually for smart kids, not "gifted". Truly "gifted" kids would probably have better experiences if the programs were only for them, and not just smart kids who learn fast. [ Reply | More ]

Most schools can't handle profoundly gifted children because the children are so far ahead of their peers intellectually. That seems obvious. Pg kids are the ones who go to college at 12 or 14. They are pretty rare. Less rare are the highly gifted - these are the ones who think like kids 3-4 grades level above their age, typically. Some of the highly gifted kids do fine in a well run mixed classroom; the work may be easy, but they can be happy anyway. Others need more specialized / differentiated instruction. it's as much about temperament and the ways in which they're gifted as anything else. That's why the posters above - who supposedly both have PG kids - could argue sincerely that special attention is/isn't needed. Here's a news flash: It depends on the kid. Not all kids are alike. I am gifted and attended small town public school. It was a nightmare for me in many ways. I was treated very badly by several teachers through the years. I would highly recommend anyone with gifted children do all they can to get them into the best possible setting and monitor. [ Reply | More ]

maybe that was your experience in a small town, but here in nyc gifted (not pg) dcs are a dime a dozen. of course you want your dc in the best possible situation, but there's no reason to think gifted dcs can't do fine in good gen ed. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 07.21.08, 02:18 PM Flag

It depends on how gifted. Moderately gifted - sure, you don't need a specialized education. You just need a good gen ed where there are other bright kids as well. But if you're talking about those at the very top of gifted chart, then you are wrong. They need something other than your standard curriculum. [ Reply | More ]
