There are several trisomies. When the chromosomes split, part/all of one does not seperate. So you wind up with three chromosomes not a mated pair. If it happens at the 21st chromosome, it is called Down's Syndrome (the most common trisomy.) At 18 it is called Edward's Syndrome (second most common.) 9/10 of babies with Edwards who make it to birth die in infancy. (My recollection is that the vast majority don't make it to birth.)
