Real estate mavens: DH is relocating for work in a hurry and we want to put our apt on the market. We were going to move out, do some minor renovations (painting, tiling, etc.), and then show it empty. Is it a mistake to show an apartment unfurnished? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

IMO (not a pro but obsessive about real estate), it's OK to show an apartment empty, but a house looks better with some furniture. Good luck! [ Reply | More ]

have the realtor takes some photos while you still have furnishing in the apt. then do close-ups of the improvments for the website [ Reply | More ]

Thanks--I appreciate the insight. What's your opinion: if we're going to repaint the whole apartment (for sale), should we just do everything white or do something else? [ Reply | More ]

is there trim on the walls? I think white on white looks too sterile, maybe do a very light neutral throughout with white baseboard/mouldings... [ Reply | More ]

There is trim. Any favorite neutrals? [ Reply | More ]

Just do a nice creamy off-white on the walls with clean white semi-gloss trim. [ Reply | More ]

white paint. While it is not terrible to show empty, recognize that apts look bigger with furntiure in them and sellers look a bit more anxious when it is empty. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks...it's a pretty small, simple apartment to begin with. [ Reply | More ]

Hmmm... the smaller the rooms, the more important it is to put furniture in there to show how much it holds (within reason of course)... what does your broker say? Will they stage it for you if you're moving your stuff out? [ Reply | More ]

We don't have a broker yet. Our apartment's at the lower end of the scale...not worth staging, IMO. [ Reply | More ]

IMO, it is much better to look at space without furniture - a blank slat [ Reply | More ]

Really, the furniture issue is not a big deal - the price is 99%. [ Reply | More ]

I know in empty apts in our building the agents selling the building brought in furniture before showing people around. I'm sure they wouldn't go to that trouble if they didn't think it made a difference. [ Reply | More ]
